I've just been looking for a GPS walking app for my iPhone, really as a bit of a geeky bit of interest since I'm going to spend my christmas in the sheep filled hills of NW England - and figured it'd be fun to see what apps are available.
After chatting to the locals it seems "Viewranger" comes highly regarded (used by Mountain Rescue teams apparently?!). So I decided to look into it. At first glance GBP50 for the 25000:1 Lake District maps seems a bit steep for a toy (I already have all the paper maps I need of the area) - but then I discovered the 'free' online maps that were available - OpenCycleMap.org has great mapping - AND even better it covers Australia too.
So I forked out the $4 for the app - and it looks pretty good so far. I can browse the website, download walking routes created by others, I can create my own from the map, or via an uploaded 'tracked route'. It all syncs between the web application and the phone pretty seemlessly and looks like a great tool.
The one downside is that although UK maps are full of lots of different walk descriptions, there are NONE in Australia. Why?
Anyway - I created a couple of routes both here and in UK, both private and public, just as a test and the public ones are now available for others to download - (including the ever popular ascent of Mt Warning).
Obviously I havent used the app in earnest yet - but I really like the idea of trying to record and share some walking routes. Anyone around here fancy joining me on a mission of getting some local routes defined?
