This is some interesting new GPS technology New Visual Navigation System Ditches Satellites for Cameras I am not sure if it would be suitable for bushwalking though.

Its a neat idea and one that has been around for a while. Not much chop if its a foggy day though. :)

There used to be a smartphone app that would recognise your location from a photo taken of the surrounding mountains. Can't find it anymore. It was NH Centric so I never bought it, but there is also an app that uses your GPS location to show you what you should be seeing:

www.heywhatsthat.com/iphone/ <-- browse to here on your iphone if you have one.

Also works for desktops: www.heywhatsthat.com

Google image search also has some interesting stuff happening, you can send it an image and it will try and match it for you.
