Some Entries are Ineligible

Postby Son of a Beach » Fri 09 Mar, 2012 8:40 am

Please note that the rules of the monthly and preliminary P.O.T.Y. photo competitions state that the same (or similar) photo cannot be entered into more than one competition.

It has been pointed out to me by other members that there are some photos in the Photo of the Year 2011 preliminary competitions which are duplicates or near duplicates of entries from the same person in other competitions. These photos will be disqualified.

I can't even remember entering that fagus pic, and it certainly didn't win, oh well, no sheep stations involved thankfully :D

Also pretty silly that a winning photo, like that copperhead pic can't be entered. It's the 'photo of the year' comp not the 'second best photo of the year' comp.

Just sayin'......

I think the photo of the Year competition is the next one after this round.
ie this is a preliminary before they all get added together.

I misunderstood, I thought it was the worst photo competition (I came to this conclusion after reviewing my entries ;) ). And I think someone in the Tas comps was trying a little too hard to think up a winning title for their photographs ;) :D
But yes if its photo of the year surely you should be able to enter you best even if it has been entered before?

As Eggs said, all the monthly winners will be automatically entered into the Photo of the Year final competition. These 5 additional PRELIMINARY competitions are specifically designed to allow people to enter up to 5 additional photos that were NOT entered into a monthly competition.

Sorry, I didn't point that out clearly this year, like I usually do. :-)

Just checking...Australia is all Australia including Tas as before the changes, right? I think you mentioned that in the rules but now I'm not sure...

Yes, the photo of the year competitions for 2011 photos follow the format of the monthly competitions BEFORE the change a few months ago. Next year, this will likely change.

I missed the posting of these new comps all together...guess I wasn’t paying enough attention, but I don’t think I am the only one since the number of entries to each are small...snooze and lose I suppose

It's difficult to know how to advertise them. There was an item in the "News" column on the index page, and a global announcement topic at the top of all forum topic lists, with a few subsequent posts, to make sure it appeared in the new/active posts lists several times.

Quite embarrassing for me that I missed it then, seems like I couldn’t see the forest for the trees (or perhaps the trees for the forest, so to speak).

Yeah. I just thought that maybe they weren't going ahead this year, but it seems Nik only wanted to delay them until I was away and, therefore, unable to enter.

Oh well, not like I would have won anything . . .

I must admit that I saw a brief query on this before it started, but then forgot about it till I virtually stumbled on it by accident after it was actually started.

And with only about 20 votes being recorded, maybe the advertising needs work and the voting period is too short.
I would really like to see votes getting up past the 40 mark for a web site this active.

Some Entries are Ineligible

Postby Son of a Beach » Fri 16 Mar, 2012 4:01 pm

NNW saw through my cunning plan!

Eggs - I agree. I usually send out a once a year bulk email reminding people about the comps and other things. I've been slack in that area this time around.

How about an 'announce' thread that only gets updated at the opening of the annual comp and we can subscribe to and get email reminders for this annual event?

Perhaps the heading for important announcements could be in a different font colour. The red administrator fonts really stand out and my eye is automatically drawn to them. For example, when the Autobot has posted in the photo comps I know the new competition has been posted for voting or the results are in. Generally I like the dark green font on the light green back ground of this forum but when new announcements are made my eye is not drawn to them. Perhaps pink, blue or yellow would work? Ok so yellow doesn't stand out and is hard to read. But pink or blue do stand out. Just a suggestion anyhow.

I don't agree - your snow gum pic on Far Bald in the interesting trees thread would get my vote any day. And you win kudos

I don't agree either. You photos are amazing!

Contrary to everyone else here I thought the comp was very obvious and clearly advertised. Ok, it could perhaps run for a bit longer so more could enter/vote. A shame with so few entries but lucky for me I guess.
