Very nice pics but I do think that 6 and 9 are more landscape than non-landscape.

From the rules:
"Entries must not be landscape photos (as determined by the voters)" - so it's up to the people who vote to keep it non-landscape. I personally think there's 3 out of 9 this month that are landscapes, and should be entered in one of the other categories. But I'm only one vote!

The main reason this category was created was because macros, fauna, and other misc images didn't usually get a look in when they were up against "real" landscapes.

I suspect that the voters don't read the rules - after all the instructions just say "Vote for your favourite photo from the list below from Non-Landscape July 2012". And I'd say my favourite photo would be one of the landscape ones too...

Blimey, I really thought the Sulphur Crests would walk away with this.

I've whinged about other people putting what I thought of as landscapes in this section, and it seems I'm guilty of that this month. But I never thought of that shot as a landscape. I still don't. It's an abstract, as the title says; a study of curves and shades of white.

Taste is a strange thing, eh?

Thanks, Dan. It is, isn't it? I think it's taken over from the Scorpio shot as my overall favourite.
A great weekend, an absolutely wonderful day, and one of the few times a photo has turned out exactly as I wanted it to.

The photos are all very good, but I agree with Dan.
That snow shot got my vote.
And as one involved in the categories debate, this sits very comfortably as an abstract/artistic shot.
Same thoughts on 9 - all about light and colour.

That's how I have been interpreting this category, sometimes I will enter a macro composition other times it will be an alternate take on 'landscape' - therefore making it non-landscape....

I thought both Winter Abstractions and Shifting Shapes were great photos, but (along with Cascade Disappears) I decided they were all landscapes. Either of them probably would have got my vote in of the other comps. Perhaps I'm being harsh on what's a non-landscape. But I figure there's three other comps for landscapes, so I'm keen to give everything else a chance. Let's face it, even when they're great shots, those "other" photos don't usually get too many votes when they're up against landscapes.

I too think that NNW and SBS's respective photos are brilliant and if they were in the other comps I would have had trouble deciding which one to vote for :). However, despite being artier than the usual landscape photo, they are still landscapes, at least to me.

Well, there you go, and I thought I'd be lucky to be fourth best and ended up winning. So, I'm as shocked as anyone.
Still, I have to say there are a couple there that I would have classified as landscapes though I loved the bottom one.
Anyhow, to those who voted for my shot that I only threw in to make up the numbers, thank you very much. I actually was at my son's place and had the camera set up for days just to shoot that bird and would duck out if I heard it in the grevillea and rack off a few shots. Paid off in the end.
Cheers all.
