Photographing North Tasmania

Ok all, it's that time of year that makes putting up with the throngs of hormonal teenagers, zits and all, worth it for me. 8 weeks vacation

SO- please help me keep myself busy. I'm looking for some good photographic spots within 100 or so km's of Devonport. So far I've come up with Liffey Falls, Cradle Mtn (duh...), beach and wildlife photos at Narawantapu, beach shots at Hawley's Beach, Fern Glade park in Burnie for some easily-accessed rainforst stream stuff. I want to spend 4-5 days over by Smithton, checking out some of the Forestry Tas walks there, but I'm not sure I can swing that this break.

I'm also going to be checking out some parts of Hellyer Gorge and Leven Canyon for some good Myrtle Beech scenery.

I'd like to get some Tassie snow gum pics too.

Any other places that need my attention?

If you are going to Liffey Falls and around Deloraine, these are well known but worth a visit. Some are really easy to get to:

Quamby Bluff (a 500m climb in about 3km but worth it IMHO)

Lobster Falls (easy walk signposted on the main road near Chudleigh...very green along the creek below the falls)

Alum Cliffs (preferably not in the afternoon as the sun is in the wrong place)

Devils Gullet

Pine Lake

Higgs Track to Lady Lake/Hut. A shortish, steep walk up of about 4km (though not difficult). Apart fom the lake, hut and views from the top there are some good photo spots in the forest, particularly around the creek crossings at the bottom and near the top (cascades). Plenty of posts and photos on BWT about this one.

Also Meander Forest Reserve. I've only been up the Split Rock track, which is worth a look, but there are other options there (eg Meander Falls, Mother Cummings Peak, Smoko Falls etc).

You mentioned Narawntapu. Around Copper Cove has interesting rocks etc. I remember seeing a huge colony of unusual looking small crabs running across the sand while walking along Bakers Beach. Also the bird hide in the Woodlawn area would be good for wetland bird shots.

You should find plenty to keep you busy I think !

You mentioned Narawntapu. Around Copper Cove has interesting rocks etc. I remember seeing a huge colony of unusual looking small crabs running across the sand while walking along Bakers Beach.

Soldier Crabs I would guess. These occur in huge numbers on the wet sand while the tide is out in many estuaries. I'm used to seeing them on the beaches on the other side of that estuary (at Shearwater, Port Sorrell and Hawley). They'd make for some good photos, I reckon.

I saw the soldier crabs yesterday actually- I'm going to get down there with my macro lens asap- they are awesome. What amazing colours!

Here's a bit since last Friday. I got some decent wildlife pics last night, and need to process them.

I'm really keen on getting some pictures in Myrtle Beech forest.

Actually, I usually leave humans out of my shots, but these were taken with the intentions of making the snow-bound members of my wife's quilt forum green with envy.
