Just doing some random browsing, stumbled upon this...
http://www.sigmaphoto.com/shop/200-500m ... x-dg-sigmaDrool!
Not for bushwalking though, see how much all that glass weighs!
Then, I guess if you can afford it, you can afford someone to carry it for you...

You could probably put some sort of grant proposal up to the Govt, that you need it to hunt the Tassy Tiger

I'm not going to the moon!
Mind you, it would be a great lens for astro photography as well as for looking for the Tiger in Tassie, from the moon...
A lens that costs much more than my car... I can't ever imagine it without a major bit of numbers luck on a Tue / Thu night.

$38k?! THIRTYEIGHTTHOUSAND?! I think Nuts is right, you could hire a helicopter for that, several times.

LOL a helicopter might not be so discreet

The price to pay for 500mm at f2.8
Did you see the dimensions?
Diameter 236... Oh boy, I could nearly hide behind that!
Length - 726 mm. Freak!
Take it to a major event and you're likely to get shot by a military sniper, looks like a Bazooka or something...
That Sigma logo on the side - that's valuable advertising space, you could rent that out!

throw a tarp over it n you could leave the tent behind too!

Um?
Probably as useful as my 500mm Tamron SP Cat lens mounted on a Canon 400D SLR which means it is 800mm equivalent

It was a replacement by an insurance company for a lovely Pentax spotting scope that some unmentionable or indescribable (using words allowed on this site) removed from my house many years back. The Tamron interchangeable mount means I can use it on a Pentax and Nikon using the original adaptors while on Ebay I brought a Canon adaptor that enables the focusing sensors to work, still have to manual focus though but at least you know when it is in focus.
Cheers Brett

Such a shame it's for use on an FX, otherwise I would have snapped one up in an instant!

From their site,
May also be used with smaller APS-c size sensors with a corresponding effective increase in focal length to about 225mm with most cameras.
When you buy it, can I borrow?

No excuses now...better go talk to the Minister for Finance...don't like my chances though! Do you reckon I'd be waiting long for one to pop up on ebay?
