ANZANG Nature Photography website

Postby Pteropus » Fri 30 Sep, 2011 3:46 pm

I was just shown this site -> http://anzang.samuseum.sa.gov.au/ for the Australia, New Zealand, Antarctica and New Guinea (ANZANG) Nature Photography competition. It has some amazing pictures. I think it might be of interest to people here. Note that the competition is on display at the South Australian Museum between 30 September and 20 November. There is also an exhibition of last year’s photos, on display in Launceston, from 24 September to 6 November (look under "Travelling Exhibitions").
I really like the overall winning photograph :)

Cheers
Andrew

Thanks for that Andrew, some great shots in there, I really like the 2011 black & white and also the 2011 interpretive winners, great stuff. I've borrowed a couple of the ANZANG books from my local library, lots of nice images to peruse...

Bob Blakers forestry burn image of a 'regenerative burn' in a logging coupe is a pretty powerful and disturbing image too, It's been covered ad nauseum but seeing that really p%$$'s me off

Theres some really talented people out there, I just wish I had more time to get out and do it myself!

You're right Adam, it's pretty average, I guess I was referring to the images more than anything else. Seeing the prize money for that competition though does make me wonder how lucrative it may be for talented & dedicated nature photographers to make a living? I guess there must be a few people out there who make a good living from it... and a larger group of hungry ones and/or those that supplement their lives by having 'real' jobs.

One of the principle reasons I decided to post this link on the forum was because I see plenty of photos posted in the forum gallery and monthly competitions that I think would be quite competitive in such a formal competition. At least half of getting a spectacular photo is being in the right place at the right time...which many of us who walk and use a camera often are.

Wow, not cheap -

The cost is AU$38.00 (includes GST) for the first image and AU$22.00 (includes GST) for each subsequent image

Absolutely right Andrew, plenty of great work to be found here, I wonder how many BA members are actively involved in entering competitions?

No, but a lot of people must take their chances which is probably why the organisers can afford to have so much prize money up for grabs. I see from his blog that the runner up in the Wildernes 2011 category, Andy Trowbridge, entered 13 images alone with only one getting through to the finals. Runners up recieve $500 minus the $302 he paid for entry fees and then the effort involved getting the photos in the first place. I hate to think what that works out to be as an hourly rate!

You have to enter though - you cannot call yourself an award winning photographer if you don't win, and you can't win if you don't enter.
