Too stupid for the OT?

Postby charlie59 » Sat 28 Mar, 2015 10:29 am

Take a look at this video on YouTube by Mike McNally. Some people prepare and are still unlucky and some are just too stupid. Can be summed up~ no wet weather gear, walking in trainers in snow and then getting pissed on top of Ossa. Wonder whether they carried the glass beer bottles out or stopped to consider what would have happened if they dropped one.

I haven't watched the whole thing but from the bit I did watch it was difficult to see if they are not prepared. They appear to have day packs which may or may not contain wet weather gear.
Its probably not uncommon for people to have a celebratory drink at the top of some summits, although beer bottles is a bit different ;)
Also, not wanting to defend something that has obviously annoyed you but trail runners are getting more common. Maybe not suited to the OLT but each to their own.

At about the 44 second mark he says that they were not prepared for snow or rain and he doesn't have a waterproof jacket

Not sure too many people would get pissed from one beer (although they may have carried a six pack in the backpack)

Good on them for trying to raise money for the community of Kalingalinga in Zambia.

I didn't see any problems. Its quite common to have a beer or two on top of a summit (and its better to drink out of glass rather than a can....). Friends and myself have done this plenty of times while ski touring in the Snowy Mts. I think the comments he made to his granny were quite touching, and it was a charity walk. No problems with the footwear - although its a bit hard to see what they are wearing in the video. He says he doesn't have a rain jacket - which is perhaps unwise, - but most bushwalkers have probably forgotten a parka on a trip or two, and have had to improvise with a "garbage bag parka" - and got through OK. He does seem to have a warm insulated jacket though. I must admit though - perhaps they took a slab up? or perhaps its the thin air? they do seem a bit unsteady on their feet on the descent......

I would assume they would have carried out the empties.

They seemed to get good mileage out of that one beer though.

Haha. That is true. I used to have a mate who could get drunk off one beer. We called him the Cadbury man - a glass and a half.

They looked ok.
Yeah they forgot a wet weather jacket and that could kill you, especially going around Cradle but for the most part after that you would be ok in summer. Cold but alive if you kept moving. The exposed areas to the wind aren't that many after the first hut.
As far as wearing runners go, well each to there own. Not my cup of tea but plenty do it.

come to the Tongariro crossing, you can virtually name any item of clothing and its been worn or forgotten on that track... most popular items worn are non waterproof jackets, jeans, cotton shirts,
from the land of the long white clouds...

Hmmm, perhaps I'm being a bit harsh. When he states no wet weather gear and trainers he totally ignores the advice Tas parks gives. Glad they got down OK.

I would do it in trail runners if I did it again, I saw a guy that did the whole thing in sandals with no issues other than two leech bites.

If my bag wasn't already bursting at the seams there would have been a few beers in it for my trip.
