Camping in the area behind Marions?

Sun 26 Apr, 2009 9:09 am

Does anyone know if you're allowed to pitch a tent on the plateau above Dove Lake? I'd like to get up there for some early am photography, but don't fancy climing up the Horse Track or Marions at 4 am.

No, Parks do not allow camping anywhere within the day-walking area. The first 2 places you are permitted to camp are Scott Kilvert and Waterfall Valley. I sometimes think that it would be nice to camp in some areas before those, but it's not permitted.

You could spend the night at the scout hut? May be busy this time of the year?

From the Overland Track brochure - Bush camping is not permitted inside the day visitor area between the park boundary and Waterfall Valley or Lake Rrodway.

I suspect nuts is talking about where the Overland passes by Fury River/Creek before the turn off to Scott Kilvert. Fury Gorge is well outside the day area.

Yes, the campsite I would recognise as 'fury gorge' is that one tastrax.
Is there another? Is the one your talking of outside the daywalk area Corvus?
Where is the daywalk area on the plateau- how far does it extend to the west (and east) of the tracks around Cradle?
Personally I dont think its a good idea to encourage camping anywhere up on the plateau???

I have had rangers specifically mention the Fury Gorge (view of) area as a no-camping-permitted area, and it was rangers that told me that no camping is permitted on the Overland Track before Waterfall Valley (and at Scott Kilvert, of course, which is really off the Overland Track). I don't know if this is Parks official policy, but it is what the rangers are saying.

Hi Folks,

Finally found the reference on the PWS website... in the Overland Track Brochure...

Cradle Mountain
Cabin accommodation is available at historic Waldheim, inside the park. Waldheim is a magical setting, and the simple huts require advance bookings with the Visitor Centre on (03) 6492 1133. The Cradle Mmountain Campground provides camping, dormitories and cabins outside the park. The shuttle bus can stop here. Phone (03) 6492 1395.

Bush camping is not permitted inside the day visitor area between the park boundary and Waterfall Valley or Lake Rodway.

So that's the definitive answer - no camping at Fury Gorge/Creek beside the overland track.

Just shows what can happen with a simple question :) Scout Lodge is your best bet and is achievable with your small person and wife .
You are halfway up to the Plateau and they can stay in a warm environment whilst you freeze your whatists' taking panos'
just Google Scout Hut or BP lodge and you will get to the booking officer.

A friend of a friend of mine, along with a couple of their friends once camped for a night down by Suttons Tarn (well I think that is what it is called - there is a quasi-official pad heading SW of Kitchen Hut). Nice place for a visit if the juganaught of humanoids ascending the Cradle Summit propper gets up your nose.

Agreed, a lovely place for a glass of wine. Still don't think camping here is allowed though.
