Kia Ora

Just a note to say we passed through Kia Ora Hut Friday 5/3 and there was very little water available in the tank. It was just a dribble. I don't think much rain has fallen since. May be wise to take some purification tablets and get water from a stream or make sure you take enough water from Pelion.

Does any one remember the old Ki-Ora hut? Here's a link to a photo I took in 1970.

I'm surprised to hear that it would be near empty after all the rain on the OT earlier that week and the week before. Must be time for a bigger tank?

Don't know what the rainfall etc has been like lately up in the NP, but i know that Cradle Huts have had problems in the past with water supply at Kia Ora, for some reason it doesn't seem to get as much rain as some of the other huts. I think the tank supply there is also quite small from memory. However, I agree, the water in the creek is great, just need to make sure people swim downstream of the bridge!

There are signs at the creek now, prohibiting swimming or washing in the creek (due to people taking water from downstream in the Mersey). Sad, but I guess it makes sense.

I seem to recall that they had two "old" tanks both hooked up and turned on but the hut roof which is small is the only supply.

The position of the toilet block to the stream bridge had me a little worried.
