Advice for overland track

I will be doing the overland for the 1st time later this month, Was thinking of extending the 2nd day to camp between Windermere & Pelion huts. Any thoughts?

I've only walked the track once (summer). I assume you mean camping at Frog Flats? Having walked through there, much of the forest etc in the area is very pretty. We didn't camp down there and my impression of Frog Flats at the time was something like "mosquito-ridden bogfest". Personally I'd continue on to Pelion; it's a relatively short distance from that point, if a bit steep initially. Bear in mind that Waterfall Valley to Pelion can be a long day for many, particularly with a heavy pack. I found it a little challenging distance-wise and was glad to finally rest for the night. Doing it again I'd opt to overnight at Windermere. Just my 2 cents worth.

Ill second the bogfest comment and add leech infested. We stopped there for lunch and wound up having to eat on the move as we were getting covered in them. I certainly wouldn't enjoy camping there

Perhaps use your spare day for an overnight n explore at pine valley?? Whilst the day is long to pellion, its not too strenuous and from memory we were in early in the afternoon with plenty of time to explore (or lie in the sun on a tent platform as my friend did

I don't know about the distances as I haven't walked the Overland Track as a whole since 1972 but did camp at Frog Flats after camping at Leonards Tarn and walking (scrub bashing) out, a couple of years ago. I guess there were mosquitoes but there was also a beautiful, quiet and uncrowded camping place.

We camped at Frog Flats two weeks ago and had a great campsite. It was on the southern side just before the track re-enters the forest. While there were leeches in the forest we saw none at the campsite. The march flies and mosquito's were around though.

IMO the best day 2 is to retrace your steps from Waterfall Valley and climb Barn Bluff then pick up packs and walk to Windemere. A visit to Lake Will is worthwhile too.

There is also some nice camping along pine forest moor as well, not official campsites but frog flats has no facilities either.

Its not far from the flats up to Pelion. Pelion Creek is the old (now closed) campsite and around half way. There are others (as erica says) but digging a toilet hole should be done Well away from the water, almost everyone drinks from these and they do slow right down without rain.
