Poll: Bit Map replacement's app name (mapping app)

Postby Son of a Beach » Tue 17 Jul, 2012 8:55 am

As discussed in this topic, I've been working on a complete re-write of the Bit Map map/navigation app (for iOS). The app should be ready for beta testing in a few weeks or months, but I still don't have a name for it that I'm entirely happy with.

Thanks to all the suggestions from the other topic, I'm now presenting a short list of them in this poll, in which you can choose up to three names. As this is my bread and butter (well, really, my cake and icing to be honest), I'm looking for a name that is more likely to result in a purchase. So something that sounds catchy and trendy is good, but it should also have wide appeal, and inspire confidence in it's intended purpose (if all that is really possible from a name). So the poll question is...

If you were to purchase a map/navigation app based purely on the name alone, which THREE of the following names would be most likely to result in you buying the app?

Feel free to discuss your reasons.

None of the above.

Being a bit of a weirdo, I would probably buy something called "Mapping App"

Dont know if you want to go to the extremes mentioned below but there are some good tips on choosing a name for your domain/app :-

Thanks for this link. It's largely common sense stuff but there's a few bits an pieces there that were new to me (particularly the generators).

I hope it doesn't offend too many potential customers over there. But in reality it was just a matter of making something that looks like a recognisable map with reasonable dimensions to fit within a small square. Adding any more continents would not have worked nicely within a square (especially for the non-retina iPhone screens where the button is much smaller than the retina iPad version pictured above).

In the old Bit Map's "view map" toolbar button, I also left Australia off. :-)

Currently, it looks like "Maps n Tracks" is out in the lead by quite a margin. Short of creating another poll, I'd be grateful if people would post and let me know their preferences between the following variations:
  • Maps n Tracks
  • Maps-n-Tracks
  • Maps & Tracks

I prefer Maps & Tracks as it it more properer engrish! But is harder to type in iOS, so Maps n Tracks is okay as well. Maps-n-tracks looks good but I wouldn't use it - just too hard.

OK. The typing issue may be worth considering, but I'm not sure.

How often do people type the names of apps on their iOS devices?

The only times I can think of are when searching the App Store (usually once per app, if at all, and precise name not required).

I guess people might want to email their mates about an app. I don't think I've done that, myself (but I should put a 'share' feature in the app somewhere itself).

I typed all your names into google and all came back with this result

Did you mean: maps and tracks

Looks like it may make no difference at all

In apple search

maps-n-tracks - no results founds
maps n tracks - About 2 results found for 'maps n tracks'. plus.....Did you mean maps n t racks? :?: :?:
maps & tracks - About 230 results found for 'maps & tracks'.
Cheers - Phil

Interesting results there Phil. I tend to agree with sthughes, in that I prefer correct English even in product names (with some exceptions) and was leaning towards "Maps & Tracks" (or even "Maps and Tracks"), but it seems as though it produces larger number of search results (probably because it is more correct english) and therefore may not be as good in that respect.

So I may end up sticking with the original suggestion of "Maps n Tracks".

grrr... now I have a problem. "Maps n Tracks" is just long enough to be automatically abbreviated with an ellipsis in the middle of its name on an iPhone home screen. So I'm going to have to ditch it. :-(

I could go with an alternative version, such as "Maps n Trax" or "Map n Track".

So a new poll has been posted here (PS. That other poll has now closed and the topic locked).
