It's been sad to watch this old building in the highlands start to decay (vandals as well as the weather). But it's up for sale by tender now. So is anybody here putting in an offer?

Tender for its demolition went out a couple of weeks ago. A buyer, leasee or user wasn't found.

To be honest, every time I pass the place (which is fairly regularly.. most recently earlier today after a night out near Julians Lake) I get annoyed that it was allowed to sit unused, unmaintained and vandalised for so long. What a waste of public money. Of course, one could argue it never should have been built in the first place... turned out the place just didn't get enough snow during winter for Antarctic training. But still, could have been turned into a useful hostel-like accommodation and base camp for fishing and hiking in the area. It appears though that by the time the government started seriously chasing that kind of user though, the place was already starting to fall apart. I'm not sure if a partial demolition of the internals went ahead in 1999 as reported or not, but for anyone to do anything with it now would almost certainly involve a complete rebuild. The asbestos supposedly inside would see to that.

Fire hazard? LOL. Had the photo shown not bore his credit I would have assumed he'd actually never been there. Concrete and stone dam wall on one side, creek on another, gravel, rock and a few sags and kerosene bushes around the rest. Yes, if vandals put a match to the place the smoke from the treated pine wouldn't be nice to breathe in, but the chance of it starting a major fire through the CPCA is on par with someone flicking an ill-placed cigarette butt out the window. And even then only during a dry summer.

Apparently the place had "state of the art heating, cooking and waste disposal"....
