Where to get most accurate weather forecast for Cradle Mt?

Postby Taz73 » Wed 29 Aug, 2012 9:56 pm

Hi All.

Just wondering as I can not find a site that forecasts close enough to that region.

I think the closest forecast I can find is for Mt Read.

Is that good enough?

I understand I need to be prepared for the worst what ever the forecast.

To even head out though I like to see it looks promising.

Even looking at the sky is not always possible as I like to head out before dawn to be among it during the best time of the day.

Thanks.

From the BOM Website
Also handy as it has the Overland Track Forecast

As above, the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) has a forecast for Cradle Valley and also for New Pelion Hut.
This makes me the first man to climb Mount Everest backwards, without oxygen...or even a jumper.

And if you're there & want to know what's going on you can read the forecast and compare it with the radar -
http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDR523.loop.shtml

And the colour enhanced infrared satellite loop -
http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDE00902.loop.shtml
EDIT The BOM have changed things - see
http://www.bom.gov.au/australia/satellite/index.shtml
And you can also get
http://www.bom.gov.au/australia/satelli ... fresh+View
Check the choices from the dropdowns.

And the 4 day forecast chart -
http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDG00074.shtml
And the currents (needs flash so not on iphone) -
http://www.meteocentrale.ch/en/weather/ ... eania.html
And the clouds & precipitation (also needs flash) -
http://www.meteocentrale.ch/en/weather/ ... eania.html
And a heap of others, and if you study them regularly & compare what each is telling you, you will learn a lot & will eventually only need the chart & possibly the radar & infrared loop.
Have fun!

While the bureau does have 7 day forecasts, here's a little example demonstrating their accuracy from 4 days out.
This is for Lake St Clair.

Forecast made on Saturday 9th March 2013 for the period Wed 13th March thru Sat 16th March...

Do BoM have weather stations? I know records are kept at Cradle but the forecast may still be just based on Mt Read? Perhaps there is a remote station at Pelion?

I met some BOM meteorologists at Pelion last year..... The rangers are supposed to be collecting some weather data, but the forecast for the OT are all based on a new model. The ranger data is just to test the accuracy.

Good stuff, I wonder how accurate they have been so far, Pelion area has always seemed the most unpredictable in the past. It's probably been of novelty value.

I've received these forecasts by satphone, each evening, for the last couple of trips. I reckon they're pretty accurate for a couple of days out. I have noticed that changes forecast seem to happen earlier than predicted. But only a couple of tours isn't enough testing.

I generally have found them accurate enough for a couple of days out. I guess they can only be getting more accurate, the modelling is likely more based on weather systems far from those immediately occurring in the park (or over the state).

Novelty as in it wont matter until your actually At Pelion Pass trying to convince people that there's no point climbing something one can't see : )

Snow this weekend?
