Eastern pygmy possum: yep, it's alive!

This one is quite tame in the orange bellied parrot observation hut at Melaleuca.

My son found this little fellow snuggled up in his beanie after a particularly cool night in the Rodway shelter. It was a big surprise for them both.

I don't have a photo but I remember the first time I saw one, I was about 5 and we saw the little guy running across the verandah. We later found he was living in a honeysuckle bush. Such a cute little creature!

@ iluvswtas, tasadam and bluewombat - thanks for your pics guys. It's hard to tell whether they're eastern pygmy possums or little pygmy possums (the main difference being that the former have curly and almost bare tails). Both cute anyway

See how fat the base of the tail is in Adam's photos? That's where they store fat to help them survive the lean winter months. That one looks particularly healthy!

This brings back memories about 10 years ago a baby down from the roof of our holiday house - it was the size of my thumb from joint to nail - we hand reared it with carnation milk and then joey milk under the guidance of the vet. We re-released it in the bush behind our house as an aggressive very healthy male wit a good fatty tail. In the early days it was in a sock around my neck to keep warm. Great memories. Hope it went on to make lots of new babies.
