XC Skiing at Ben Lomond

Postby Maelgwn » Wed 22 Jun, 2011 8:20 pm

I am heading to Launceston and Burnie is a couple of weeks to visit family, and we are hoping to get out to the snow for a day. I was wondering if anyone knows of XC ski hire in Launceston (or on the mountain) and can suggest a good day trip?

I have googled and details are very thin on the ground (possibly like the snow) although many sites claim the cross country skiing is great!

Would also consider snow-shoeing if that will be easier.

I don't know about gear hire, but the circuit over Little Hell is very pleasant. It makes a good walk, anyway, I assume it would also be worth skiing.
The route down from Legges Tor across the Plains of Heaven is also poled, I think. I think . . .

Thanks. Yeah I rang Paddy Pallin in Launceston and they pretty much said I wouldn't find skis for hire. Snowshoes yes though.

I've skied cross country a couple of time out little hell way. Its quite nice.

The tough bit is having enough snow to make it worth while.
I use 1m long snowblades - they're like a hybrid snow shoe and ski, great for manoeuvring around and dodging in between rocks. ;-)

Often the snow level is only down around the village but the big snowfall a couple of weeks ago should have set things up nicely.
But I reckon it'll need more snow soon.

I've done a bit of XC skiing up there but don't really know any of the route names. Depends completely on the snow cover. One year it was good enough to get most of the way across the plateau towards Stacks Bluff. I'm not in Tassie at the moment but I hear there's been some pretty decent snow, but is it that decent? I don't know...
