Frenchmans cap

Hi,

I was just wondering if anyone could shed some light on public transport options to/from frenchmans cap from either hobart or launceston? Looking at visiting tassie again in december (did OT in May - it was spectacular, especially with the fagus in it's element!), but i'm not sure whats the best way to get there and back...

These guys could probably help you. Its right on the Lyell Highway, so you could take a bus to the west coast and get off part way?

If you get yourself to LSC the local shuttle will run you down/ pickup from the Franklin carpark (or anywhere down that way..). Not the cheapest but a very flexible option.

We had the same dilemma earlier this year for getting to/from Frenchman's. Transfers to/from the Lyell highway are a nightmare. I know the Tassielink bus between Hobart and Strahan can stop there to drop off/pick up, but it runs infrequently and it's very hard to fit your schedule around it.

Paying for charter transfers would only be cost effective with a large group (probably 6 or more people).

For us, it turned out to be cheapest to hire a car (a tiny Hyundai Getz) and leave it in the carpark. It also meant we weren't restricted by bus timetables. Cost about $400 including insurance for 6 days.

The car hire companies charge a fortune for insurance (sometimes up to the same daily cost as the car, so a $300 hire becomes $600). The best way to do this is to hire the car without insurance from the hire car company, and invest in some travel insurance which covers the hire car. It works out SO much cheaper, plus you get the added protection for delayed/cancelled flights etc.

+1. I've done the same twice in Tassie and agree that it is a much cheaper option. Fortunately haven't had to claim but make sure you read the policy conditions and benefits carefully. I selected the insurer from here:
