Eastern Arthurs + Fed Peak

Fri 31 Jul, 2015 2:56 pm

Hi everyone

A group of us walked the WAs this year (Scotts Peak Dam -> Moraine A -> Moraine K -> Scotts Peak Dam) and would like to do the remainder of the Arthurs + Fed Peak next year.

I am trying to figure out the best route to do this without missing out on too much or doubling up too much on what we've already done. It would also be really great to avoid a car shuffle if possible (can anyone tell me how far is it from the start of the Huon (Yo Yo) Track to the start of Farmhouse Creek Track? Forgive me, I don't yet have all the topos for the area and only have selected scans of the Chapman guide.)

I'm not sure whether to try the Huon Track -> Cracroft Crossing -> up Moraine K to get us to where we finished last time, however that is a solid two days of walk in, but it may be worth it if it means we can then walk the EAs, Fed Peak, and then back down via Farmhouse Creek Track. The only thing would be getting from the end of Farmhouse Creek back to the start of the Huon Track....

I'd love peoples thoughts on how we might go about completing the traverse? Surely people have done this before (breaking the Arthurs up into two trips)... I guess they may have had a car shuffle though.

Cheers :)

It's a solid mission of a day 6 - 8 hours along the Huon Track from Cracroft, then about 25k's (roughly) to the start of Farmhouse Creek from memory along fairly boring dirt roads. I once went from High Moor to Cracroft in one very long tiring day, but in reverse (adding the climb up Moraine K) guess it would take you 7 - 8 hours at least to get from Cracroft to a first nights camp (Haven, Prom Lake) up on the range, and be just as taxing. Thought about stashing a pushie?? Wouldn't be too much fun to do both legs at the start/end of a trip. Car drop/shuffle would be you're best bet obviously. If you get dropped at Farmhouse you could walk the EA's & the remainder of the WA sections & hitch out (or use phone at restaurant) from Tahune Airwalk or Scotts Peak.

Car shuffle with someone who wants to do something similar in the reverse direction would be the best bet. Like maybe me - although I have to redo the entire Western Arthurs to pick up a few peaks I missed first time through . . .

Dates would be approximately 25 March - 3rd April 2016. Not sure on numbers yet but probably 3 or 4 of us.

So it sounds like my initial idea of trying a loop makes at least 3 long days total of boring hiking just to get in/out of the main stuff. Not ideal. Good to know it's possible to get from Cracroft up Moraine K and into the Arthurs in a day though.

Possibility... take pushbikes... drop packs at start of Huon.... drive to Farmhouse Creek.... pushbike back to packs.... walk to Cracroft Crossing... haha.
