Recomendations for awesome day walks within 2 hours of Launc

Wed 25 Jan, 2017 1:12 pm

Hi

I am looking for recommendations for awesome day walks within about a 2 hour drive from Launceston. Date is early march.

I am asking for mates who walk with me but I am not going on this trip.

They have basic to limited navigational skills - On Track and easy to follow is an requirement. They have access to a PLB.

They are of an reasonable level of fitness, hills and scrambles not an issue - up to about 15 kilometers walk distance, but please suggest short ones too!

They will have access to a hire car.

Good views, places to swim, old growth forests, nice spots for lunch are things they enjoy.

I have googled and I know Cradle Mountain is 2 hours drive. Found the Tas Parks 60 best walks site and app. http://www.parks.tas.gov.au/index.aspx?base=1315

What I am asking is whats the must do, most awesome, heart opening walks near Launceston. There is so much to choose from, and only 4 days to do it in.

Thanks,
Jack

Meander Falls is good. Quamby Bluff and Mt Roland are must do's for me but need clear weather for views (same for all summits).
Projection Bluff is another worthy contender - short, steep climb and optional wander across the plateau.
For easier and/or shorter options - Liffey Falls, good but popular.
Plenty of standout choices at Cradle Mtn, including Cradle summit itself, which would be the most challenging option in my opinion.
Enjoyable circuits I've done there include Twisted Lakes > Lake Hanson, Hansons Peak > Face Track, Dove Lake > Lake Wilks > Choice of return routes.
In Tasmania always consider the fickleness of the weather when planning. 4 days isn't a lot of time.

Ben Lomond is good, with a couple of well marked routes discussed recently.
Ben Nevis and Mt Arthur are other good mountains to the east.

If there is some rain just before (or during) the planned visit, there are several good waterfalls east of Launceston.
Halls, St Columba, Ralphs, Matthinna, EverCreech, Hardings, Meadstone, Meatus and Lost Falls.

Victoria and Albert are close to one another and short enough to do both on a single day.

But with only four days - if the weather permits, Meander Falls, Roland, a day at Cradle and another at Ben Lomond.
