coal falls

has anyone been to coal falls on storys creek. is there a walking track to these falls and how long is the walk.

Hi biggc, the 100000 tasmaps show a track to coal falls which looks like around 3km each way.

Has anyone actually been up the track that is marked following Storys Creek to Coal Falls? The 1:100,000 map shows it branching off the Stacks Bluff track not far from the end of the road and then rejoining up on the plateau. I've walked up Stacks Bluff a couple of times and I don't remember seeing a track branching off. It would be a steep climb to gain the 500 metres altitude required to reach Coal Falls. I'm sure BiggC's little tackers are tough but given it could end up being a steep, trackless scrub bash, I would see if anyone has done it already before deciding to drag little ones along.

I agree with Tas trekker, I didn't see an obvious track branching off the one to Stacks Bluff.

The photo shows the approximate location of Coal Falls from the Stack Bluff track near the top of the ridge near Denison Crag. The small lake is Tranquil Tarn, and Coal falls is more or less directly behind it in this view. I suspect that light brown area is in the creek bed.

While I've not been there, it looks like there would be a lot of scree to negotiate. The forested areas tend to have an understorey of mountain berry and other prickly bushes, so if you're off track it might not be the most comfortable walk.

I've been to Coal Falls - but the route we took was over the plateau (starting at Carr-Villa, camping at Lake Youl).
I suppose if the off-track rock-scramble is not really your thing, you could take the Stacks Bluff track up to the plateau, then sidle across (easy walking once you are up!) to the creek and down to the falls. There are a couple of pools that make a nice place for a dip on a sweltering day

I've done it in summer and there's nothing hard about the climb or navigating but the is no track as such. I then went along the plateau to Stacks Bluff. It definately isn't a beautiful waterfall and if you are thinking it will be, you'll probably be disappointed. However Tranquil Tarn is lovely. It would be very icy and wet and much more difficult in winter and as I recall it was a long day even for summer, but I wasn't rushing.

The first time I went up Stacks Bluff, many years ago, we went up Storys Creek past Coal Falls and across the plateau. So when I went up Stacks Bluff a couple of years ago, I thought that I would come back this way. Very nice. A little steep above the falls but nothing hard. I just followed the creek down trying to follow the old track as much as possible. Eventually I cut through the forest back to the car (with the help of my GPS). Anyway here's a photo. And yes, that is a tunnel entrance.
