Freycinet - carry water?

Sat 29 May, 2010 10:51 pm

Hi,

Does anyone know if still have to carry water this time of year?

Found this note below on a website - any idea if it is accurate? water needs treating? or other places where water might be this time of year?

Possible water collection points (rainfall dependent) are found at the following sites: tap at the walker’s car park, Lagunta Creek at Hazards Beach, and tank at Cooks Beach Hut. Depending on rainfall, water can be located at Graham Creek where the track crosses the creek below Mt Graham and at the southern end of Wineglass Bay. There is no fresh water at Bryans Beach.

Cheers,

Andrew

Wouldn't expect water would need to be carried after the last 2 days of rain.

Wow just read the news 150mm on Friday night & Saturday and another 50mm expected today. We haven't had much rain here (about 70km from St Mary's in a straight line NW).

Ditto Bap.

I've never had any problems with water at Cooks Beach Hut, however I do reccommend carrying plenty of water if you are walking over Mt Graham.
Once got caught relying on the Graham Creek supply which was bone-dry, and we had to continue our walk down to Wineglass and back over the saddle to Coles Bay with only a mouthfull of water (not much fun). Yes we had carried an extra "emergency" litre on top of our usual supplies, but the 30+ degree day meant we used more than we initially planned.

Well had a fantastic 3 nights down there. Magic weather. Was plenty of water. Carried 1.2 litre to start with but cut down to 600ml. Was heaps even over Mt Graham about 10 creeks between Cooks and Wineglass but there had been heaps of rain. I would say that the south end of Hazards Beach, Cooks hut and Wineglass Bay South end would be pretty reliable most of the time. This trip there were creeks everywhere.

Cheers,

Andrew

While on the subject of water at Freycinet, has anyone walked from Bryans Corner (?) along the beach and then off track up along the ridge spine to the Mt Fortescue/ Mt Graham track? I believe that there is a water soak up there which should be good for water in winter. The 1:25,000 shows a marsh in the vicinity to which I am referring.
I am considering this walk as something to do over the colder months. Any information would be appreciated - please by PM.
Cheers
Andrew
