I have two questions that I need answers for. The first one is ten months away. A group of three from WA looking for a moderate to hard walk in June over three days. They want to see some of the best of Tassie, but not do a "tourist walk". They have very little off-track experience.
What do you suggest?
Since the second question is about Victoria I've posted
here.

Walls Of Jerusalem. You don't have to tourist walk in those areas, you can practice your off-track, walk to Lake Ball, Lake Adelaide, Lake Meston etc.
And the best of Tassie? I'd say its definately up there!!

Thanks Nick. That was my first suggestion but they've been there.
They wanted to walk the Western Arthurs, but I was so sure it would be an ideal three day walk in June. So what is at least as good as WOJ but not as daunting as WA in June?

Yeh I wasnt sure the WOJ would fit into the hard category either??
How about Frenchmans? Although thats not exactly really hard either from what I hear.
Mt Anne circuit can be done in 3 days, Thats always a bit of a challenge.....

What would Anne be like in Winter (June).
Fri 06 Aug, 2010 7:39 am
If it was anything like this year it'd be ok. Potentially they could encounter ice. While summiting Anne is HIGHLY recommended, it isnt necessary to complete the circuit.

Theres always Pigsty ponds. Thats a relatively straight forward walk. Once up there you can do a day trip to Pindars peak and Laperouse.
Gives a taste of the SW on relatively good tracks

Both sound good. I've no idea at all about the pigsty ponds track, but a look over the SW might appeal to them. Which ways is best if you just wanted to go to the summit of Mt. Anne and return?
Fri 06 Aug, 2010 7:54 am
The NE ridge is by far the most appealing and stunning, a bit trickier and less of a track (I have GPS co-ords PM if wanted) Otherwise straight up over the Eliza plateau is the usual way. The NE ridge is the old track up before the Scotts peak road went in and is a discouraged route by PWS.
If you have Chapmans SW Tas book it gives a good description of the trip to Pigsty in the Southern Ranges section.

WA's in June probably generally ok as they are fairly low, but as always pack for anything.
Day 1 - Huon camp to lake Cygnus (a fairly long day tho).
Day 2 - day trip to lake Oberon or to Mt Sirius overlooking Oberon (beautiful, exciting walking).
Day 3 - out & home.
You could always camp at Huon camp the night before day 1 to get an early start.
WA's IMHO are the 'best' Tassie has to offer, or at least some of the best.
Another suggestion would be the southern Reserve:
Day 1 - ferry to Narcissus, walk to the Labyrinth.
Day 2 - multiple day walk options in this amazing area - eg. Du Cane range high point, Geryon North (if they want something a little more exciting).
Day 3 - back to Narcissus & ferry back.
Southern Reserve area, particularly the Labyrinth is my favourite area after the Arthurs for sure.
Marks suggestion of Pigsty / La Perouse / Pindars also a great one.
Anne circuit is great but exposed in winter.
Stu.

Yer, I'd second that, and the Acropolis second day? June is nice, snow can slow things down but with this walk thats no drama..
Arthurs are nice but long slog for 3 days? At least pine valley is only a short walk in...

What about Lake Meston area and Junction Lake and work in with trip down to Lees Paddocks and a 'race' up into center of Reserve and back.
A lot of stunning stuff to see.
My 2 bobs worth from fond memories of that neck of the woods.

How about Lake Rhona?
The Gordon River crossing would of course be the issue but I'm positive it would have been easily negotiated this June. A case of monitoring the weather but a truly stunning area!!!

There are some very good suggestions here. Keep them coming. I think a few of them would need careful monitoring of the weather, and probably two or three fall back plans. But some real good ideas here for next June.

I think I'd hold back on sending people to Lake Rhona until they install a toilet up there. From all recent reports, people are crapping all over this beautiful area
What's medium/hard anyways? I would say Frenchman's Cap in June is regarded as hard by National standards.
