Haven't been up the track but if you ring Lake St Clair Visitor Info, at least one of the rangers knew a bit about it when we climbed Mt Rufus earlier this year.
For memory, the track road starts off the Lyell Highway, west of Derwent Bridge. The track is on a TASMAP, I think?

Rufus Canal Road - its about 10 minutes past Derwent Bridge and sign posted.
Drive along the road until it turns left and crosses a bridge. Immediately on the right hand side look for two sticks side by side with tapes stuck into the ground.
There is a small parking space a short distance further up the road.
Thats pretty much it. - Its kind of easy to miss the sticks if you are not paying attention. If you come out onto button grass and start heading towards Mt Gell you've gone too far up the road.
