I was hoping a local might be able to answer a question - I'm doing the Overland Track in Feb, flying in 4:30 pm Sat to Launceston. Will I be able to get a gas cannister for my cooker between then and 8:15am Sunday when the bus to Cradle Mtn leaves?
Thanks, Jane

Best of luck Jane.
I tried buying gas cannisters in Launceston during open hours a couple of years ago. MDs - none. Allgoods - none. Paddys - four. I bought three. Then Paddys had one.
I suggest you ask the bus company if they sell them.

Jane, if you give Mountain Designs a call they might be able to work something out for you, maybe drop them at your accom for Saturday night.

Gas cans and other 'last minute camping gear' can also be purchased at the Cradle Mountain visitor centre where you collect your pass before you start the walk. At least they did in 2008 when I was there. Maybe you could just call the visitor centre there and they might be able to put a gas can aside for you.
Only catch is that it's a bit more expensive compared to buying in a hiking gear store.
Edit: another option: if you spend the night at the Arthouse hostel in Launceston, they sell/hire hiking gear at the reception and I'm sure they could organise something for you if you tell them with your booking. Very friendly people there.
