East of Lake St Clair

Mon 29 Nov, 2010 6:52 pm

Going up on the Plateau for a few days in a couple of weeks time and thinking of returning down the eastern side of Lake St Clair. We have done some of this before from Lake Sappho to Travellers Rest Lagoon which is very easy (and some of the best Richea you will find anywhere when it is in flower) but this time we are thinking of continuing south/south-west through the forest (from roughly the end of Travellers Rest) and finishing at the Pump Station on the corner of the Lake. Has anyone done this and can let me know how difficult it is?

Did this in the eighties, so it's a bit out of date. We went up from the weir on Lake St Clair to Lake Sappho and Mt Ida and returned the same way. Very enjoyable. Some minor scrub on the way up but that will be easier with gravity on your side. Go for it. Here's a picture of one of us crossing the weir - basically a hinged plate held in place by the water flow, don't know what's there now.

We found it fairly straightforward and headed to Lake Sappho.

The richea looks like having a bumper year, maybe a little late flowering in some areas with all the rain, all the best

Made it through the forest OK. A long slog and took about 5 hours with plenty of rests. Wouldn't like to try it without a GPS to keep on course. The forest is mostly Eucalypt and fairly open, not a lot of serious scrub. We finished at the dam as we had checked the flow across the weir before we left and decided it was too strong. The richea is just starting in the open areas before the forest - does look like it's going to be a vintage year.

Graham, you say it took 5 hours, was that from Traveller's Rest lagoon?

We entered the forest about 2km west of the bottom of Travellers Rest - an enormous expanse of Richea marked Heath on the Olympus Map. 3560 4170. Graham
