mt anne circuit

Mon 17 Jan, 2011 12:19 pm

greetings! I am over 1 month into a trip in tassie, and depending on how the cash flow goes, ill have another month to go!
been down the west coast and the central highlands and had some of the greatest aussie experiences of my life .

in the next week or 2, my friend and I are planning to do Mt Anne circuit (not really sure what the 'circuit' officially is, however i have disected the Mt anne posts on this site and I know what I want to see.)
we want and adventure! I am an avid rock climber and hope to summit via the North East Ridge (seen at the bottom of the below link
http://www.thesarvo.com/confluence/display/thesarvo/Mt+Anne

and am very impressed by pictures seen in this forum
viewtopic.php?f=9&t=1679

basically, we would really love to get to Mt Anne via the sinkhole (seen in the above post "NE Ridge of Anne - revisited").
just wondering if anyone has recently done it, or knows it well and can advise me as to the level of routefinding requiured.

now...our walking experience.. = minimal :( but we are fit lads, and have good kit. only thing im worried about is obviously routefinding difficulties. we have a compass and I know how to use it, but no map yet (im in hobart now, where can I pick one up?)

oh well im getting kicked off a computer in the glenorchy library, so I hope this is enough info to give me a bit of advice.
cheers cheers!

From memory it's Anne and Scotts that you will need (1:25000), but best to check.

Read plenty about the equipment you will need for the southwest of Tassie. I got snow in Feb in 2008 at shelf camp, enough for us to abort the idea of a circuit, but still had a great time.

Also bear in mind the Northeast Ridge is a sensitive area and any info on the "track" will need to be through PM.

If you still need further info feel free to msg me. I have done this walk up to the ridge and over Mt Anne from that side.

If your walking seriously the circuit can be done in a day. Easily an overnighter for strong walkers, slow walkers can do it in 2-3 nights easily.

The notch is a non event IMO. First time I was there I was equipt with ropes and nerves, got to the spot and thought... "IS THAT IT"????? It's about 3metres high and requires a short easy scramble. Having said that if you are not comfortable on rock or with slight heights you would probably find it different.
