higgs track- no easy walk in the park

locating higgs track from the WOJ (zion gate), thru to lake nameless proved both time consuming and fruitless. has anyone completed this section recently? any advice for my next attempt ?

In a nutshell, there is no "track or regular route" between those two locations. Sure folks have done it in the past but they would be experienced at off track navigation - its part of the joy of having untracked areas. A great experience when you finally do find your way.

You'd be far better off IMHO to walk it in reverse.

If you go to Ironstone hut at lake Nameless then walk about 2k's south before heading SW for a few k's (about 10-12)past the beautiful lake Gwendy, and passing south of Long Tarns and lake Nutting then you're nearly there. If you know the shape of the Walls, you can see them from a long way away. You wouldn't go wrong heading towards Mount Jerusalem.
If you really want to walk from the Walls end you should be able to pick up a marked track if you walk ENE from Zion Gate and make your way
past the Eastern end of Long Tarns but not too close.
If you do find the track before you get to the Long Tarns then you should find the interesting Nuttings cross.

I walked from Lake McKenzie to the Walls and on to Lake StClair via Chinamans Plains /Mts of Jupiter and down through the Gatepost last year. If you're competent at off=track navigation you won't need a track. It's a beautiful area and well worth the visit. Take a fishing rod as well if you enjoy that. You certainly don't need a track to avoid any scrub etc because there is always an open way to choose.

Trying to follow Higgs Track can waste a lot of time and energy and if you do manage to follow it and lose it, you may be confused as to your location unless you've been thumbing the map. It's many times more enjoyable to just follow your nose cross country. Yes going from Lake Nameless to the Walls is probably easier than the reverse but going via Turrana Heights will give to a good chance to see the way forward.

A question for Graham or anyone. I've walked over the Plateau but only in dry years and wonder what it is like after so much rain in recent months. I'll be there in March and wonder what conditions are like say between lake Pillans - Butters Lake - WOF and on Chinamans Plains. Mostly I stick to stony ground-rocks to keep off the plants but wonder about creek crossings and possible boggy ground. Any commenst?

Gatepost is indeed where ILUV pointed out, but the track is up from Du Cane gap, there is a pad which starts off indistinct and gets better as you head up toward the plateau. Easy to find when you're looking for it.

Hi Mike, as you are travelling across the plateau at the very top of the watershed, the creeks etc should be ok unless there is rain immediately before you go. Even then most fall quite quickly and the Pine river is about the biggest you'll cross. Last year it was almost dry in the Silver -Sally lakes area. Sure you'll get through ok.
