suitable camping areas in Hartz Mt???

Fri 22 Apr, 2011 10:05 am

Hi,
We are heading to Hartz Mountains tomorrow - will probably be ready to start walking early afternoon. We plan to overnight but still a bit confused about this area as I am not familiar with it at all. Is it easy to find somewhere to set up camp? We are newish to overnighting, so safety is our first priority!! Preferably not too far off track.
Any suggestions?

P.S. thanks for replies to my earlier post on this same topic - just having trouble getting a mental picture of this area as we have never been there. We are "middle-aged" walkers with limited overnight experience, so need to plan carefully at this stage!!!
Thanks,
Deb

There are no hardened campsites within the park that I know of, have you contacted PWS?

There are plenty of places near the track in this pic I would be comfortable pitching a tent, some(many) would not....

Bare in mind the whole plateau can be 'clagged in' anytime of the year reducing visibility to 10 metres, with good visibility it is a very easy area to navigate in.
The Hartz Pass area middle of frame is very exposed, more sheltered areas can be found down at Hartz Lake(left of frame) or near Ladies Tarn Right of frame.

Hartz Pass provide stunning views to the West.

If in doubt camp at Arve River campsite. This is a relatively short daywalk after all.

Thanks for that - v. useful info and photo. Have thought about Arve River as a spot to camp and may still do that, depending on weather and what time we get there. Trying to harden ourselves up a bit and gain some experience so thought camping along the walk may be more of a challenge without pushing it too much!!!
