Snowy South

Tue 16 Aug, 2011 5:26 pm

Pouring over Google earth to find good daywalks from Hobart I though Snowy Range looked like it could be interesting. Cant find too much info and I'm a bit confused about the starting point. On Google Earth I found a photo from the starting point placed at 42°56'28.29"S 146°42'44.74"E. Is this correct? On another map I've seen a different starting point (can't remember exactly where). Is Dennison/McDougalls Rd the best way to get there?

On the way up, above lake Skinner, according to one map the trail goes to right of the small tarn (by following the cairns???) but I've read somewhere it is better to go left along the edge. How is the track anyway? easy to follow? Not too confident with off track walking yet especially when the weather is likely to be not great.

How long would a return trip take (roughly)?

Any info is appreciated :)

I live just down the road from this walk, have done it quite a few times. The lake Skinner track is signposted and easy to find. It is a great track to the lake, then from there it's more of a bushwalkers track. The last few hundred metres to the top is offtrack, but it's very very easy.

Not sure on your pace, but a return trip to Snowy south for me takes around 5 hrs.

Thanks, sounds good! What about the starting point...? Or do you mean it's sign posted from the main road?

Yes the lake skinner track is signposted from denison road. as long as your eyes are working that day you wont miss it.

Above 1100m it's still quite abundant. especially on the aptly named snowy range

What would crossing the ridge to take in Nevada Peak as well be like? I estimate 8-9hrs return, would it mostly be on boulders?

I reckon more likely 10-12. I'd give at least 2 hours each way from the Snowy South track, plus 6 return for Snowy South. You would want the long summer days, or even better, a car shuffle to walk it as a circuit.

The Snowy Range looked quite incredible today, sun shining all day!
