Hey,

is there any sort of program or website that has walking tracks in tassie on it? im imagining something like google earth only with a whole bunch of walk tracks etc on it, something that gives details like distances and alt and even track notes etc... does such a thing exist?

Cheers

Hey it might be useful to share what i have found works for me....
Firstly:
there is the site: http://www.sharemyroutes.com which i and others have posted recognised track and routes onto for public downloading. - feel free to add more (i have only just started putting tracks up here but the more the better it is for everyone)- it also has a useful elevation tool built in and the moderator is quite good- happy to program in improvements from suggestions so far....

but Secondly:
you can create a path in google earth freeware version (- ideally in conjunction with refering to official maps and paths as i don't really agree with bush-bashing as there are so many great tracks around already),
save the path on your computer,
then convert it to the file type your GPS uses with the freeware program ( I use GPSbabel ) then upload it onto your GPS unit and off you go.

Using this method in reverse, you could convert the .GPX files to .KML with GPSbabel (google it to find the freeware program GPSbabel GUI) the KML files can be opened in google earth and viewed that way... if you get stuck PM me if you want and i'll try to help out... Cheers Liam

other sites:
http://www.stepwhere.com/listpaths/srchkey/tasmania

The Overland track files are available on the following website - it has the huts and the full track file (incorrectly listed as points on the website)
http://www.parks.tas.gov.au/index.aspx?base=7827#3

You can register at http://www.everytrail.com or http://www.everytrail.com/destination/c ... l-park/map
and download gpx files of a few tracks.

Also http://www.thelist.tas.gov.au has maps of tassie but there is no cache on the maps you have already seen so it is very slow to load.

Try mapmyrun.com it is used for runners, walkers cyclists etc and gives distances, gradients and elevations. I have posted a few of mine on there such as the Mt Anne Circuit and My Frecinet. A great program that is free and uses google maps to plot the walks. My tracks are under my user name tassierunner if you want to have a look.

I purchased Oztopo mapping which is basically 1:25000 detail for all Australia. It is almost the same as Google Earth with most walking tracks covered.
Cost is $229 for DVD....then can load onto GPSr. I've found it to have brilliant coverage....the only snag is that it can only be licensed for 1 GPSr

Thanks Liam, for the tip about Earth Google, and GPSBabel. I did some plotting, file conversion and downloaded it to my Garmin and it works a treat. Not difficult at all. Walking the plotted route will be another story though.
Cheers
Andrew
