West Coast, Cape Sorrell to Hibbs lagoon-Point

Postby spoonbill » Wed 16 Nov, 2011 1:56 pm

Hi, I am requesting any info that may be useful relating to access to this part of the coast. I have read the Chapman notes in his publication and would appreciate any updated info especially about access from Birches inlet or transport options to Hibbs Lagoon. The intention is to do a one way trip and eliminate the down and back from Cape Sorrell. I am lead to believe that there are some scratchy mining tracks around and any info regarding these would be helpful.
Any info re transport options for this region would be helpful.
We are a group of 4 mature bushwalkers that have had previous experience with walks in the Southwest, South West Cape, Port Davey Track and the Western Arthurs.
cheers Spoonbill

Hi Spoonbill

If you have 7-8 days and can afford a helicopter (Strahan Seaplane and Helicopters - you will likely need 2 trips for 4 people and packs), then start further south from Endeavour or Spero Bay and enjoy more of the coast and head North to Cape Sorrell. You may walk into a Northerly gale like we did, but I still reckon it's your best bet. You can arrange a boat across Hells. It's also Cray season and perhaps you could phone around and try to get a boat from Strahan or Hobart (much cheaper option than Helicopter but less reliable). Re Birch's Inlet, I believe you can get a charter boat to the Inlet, but I'm not sure of the 'track' quality across to the coast.
