Dynamic soaring.....

Mon 27 Feb, 2012 10:46 pm

Hi
I stumbled across this site a few months ago , and was amazed by the great photo's and info. I'm on a quest.... My friends and I do a sport called dynamic soaring. We fly highly specialized RC gliders , powered by the wind. To incredible speeds.
On a recent trip to tasmania ( my first) I fell in love with the place. Ticks every box...amazing food people , air , fishing and for me WEATHER.....WIND..and lots of it. The stronger the better. 50knots ++++ would be great as we are chasing the world record.
I've been searching google earth finding easy accesses area's with the RIGHT shaped hill/ mountain. And have found ally the I think are Potential site to fly. We need a hill that is exposed to the wind....seems to be slot of NW later, in the spring.
What we do is very hard to explain BUT I will try. , and post some video's so you get the idea. I live and breath DSing (as we call it) and I design and build my own planes , and have put the last 6 years developing planes.. And NOW we want the chase records.. At the moment the Americans have the best place the fly in the world. They are our friends and we talk al the time , and some of us go over to fly there RECORD hill.
There are a few of us that would rather spend out money and time at home , doing short trips to tasi. AS we know it has all the ingredients to break the record.
How we do it we fly up off the front of the hill where the wind is blowing from ( just like and eagle) riding the lift created by the hill...IF the hill is shaped right , the wind will separate from the top of the hill , and on the BACK of the hill it will create a DEAD zone of still air..( that's why you camp in the still side) you are in the DS zone.
So after getting hight on the frond we dive over the back in to the still air and do a oval type circuit and punch back out to the front....where the wind separates it creates a high speed Shear layer of wind that is compressed...
We hit that and turn back over the back side and repeat ...
By doing this many time you gain energy , and speed...on the perfect hill you can gain 10x WIND SPEED...yes that fast.

The world record ATM is 487mph....powered by the wind..Amazing. Gives me goose bumps every time I tell someone.

We basically need a hill that is steep on the front and back....with a half ok landing area. ( Heath etc is ok to land on) just not plan rock :D :D....bigger better....and more extreme wind is better.

We would love all of your knowledge , pics , video's and advise to help us on our quest to be the fastest on the planet.
I'm sure task will come through with the goods.

Sorry about the rant , there is no way to say it short..I'll post some vids , hopefully that will help you understand how and what we do..

Tim.

This is where all you guys come in..
WE need to find the best DS hill in Australia if not the world.

Hi
As you will see in the video , this is WELDON in California ..it is one of the best hills in the world. It's in a wind corridor.

From the video it seem still , the wind is coming from behind the camera. And the plan is flying on the back side of the hill in still air....
When it fly's up above the camera, this is where the wind is separating from the top if the hill ....this is where we get our power and speed. Enjoy.

BTW the screaming sound is the resonance of the carbon fiber wings...they are hollow molded.

Hi
This was the world record , the new wasn't on camera. This will give you an idea what speed a glider with only the wind pushing it can go..
Again the wind is from behind the camera , GOPRO mounted to chris's head. 468 mph.
Because of the frame rate , it is very hard to see at first when Spencer is flying.....but when Chris fly's and it is below 400mph the camera can pick it up.
