One or more night Tassie walking loops

Postby Ent » Mon 20 Aug, 2012 9:56 am

Hi

A lot of Tassie walks are best done as car shuffle and/or in out but it is great to do loops that have one of night camp outs. Of course there will be at times some re-walking parts of the track or road bash but the aim is for largely loops in the bush. A few might involve a bit of creative off track wandering but the idea is not for a scrub bash nor to upset Parks (too much). What are your favourite loops?

Just to get the ball rolling lets start with a simple one

1. Dove lake to Marion Look Out and around the back of Cradle and then down to Scott-Kilvert an out by Hanson Peak. (one night). There are also quite a few variations on that loop to freshen it up.

What are your favourite loops?

Cheers

The Denison Range for a partially off track circuit. Up over Mt Wright and the Stepped Hills to Lake Rhona, then out via the Rasselas track.

In the "more" category some more attractive looking loops are probably Greystone Bluff and the White Monolith Range and a return Spires circuit from the Denison Range.

Kind of includes anything the imagination offers really....

Possibly a more defined question will deliver more appropriate responses, 1 night, 2 nights or 20 nights?

I'm assuming you are after 1 to 3 night trips?

In which case Picton Circuit, Mt Field, Anne Circuit, Traveller Range, Tyndalls etc etc
I like the idea of doing Cuvier Valley up to the Guardians and returning via LSC

Or just draw a line on a map and go for it!

Just looking at getting up a list of walks that rely on only one car. Often a common question that I get asked by interested people and also like such walks myself. Number of nights no great issue within reason as people can make their own minds up on how long to take. Gradually been knocking over the loops and developing a few options. Sure, with off track you can connect any points but rather more interested in track walks to to stick to forum rules. That does not mean for the sake of a couple of kilometres tracks can not be joined. In fact looking at the Forum rules at the moment "Please avoid publishing details of access to sensitive areas with no tracks." This rule I understand but it frustrates me more than any other rule. Never struck such a rule in any walking club but I suppose the trouble is an area can get over whelmed once well known.

My personal favorites are the loops in the Cradle and Walls areas but looking to link in the Tiers as well. Plan to map them out and put them up on this thread.

Sort of hamstrung a bit by what is a track and what is not a track. A classic is the the Dixon Kingdom loop by Lake Ball. In theory the link from Lake Ball does not exist but it is a pretty straight forward run with at least a partially defined track. Similar is the link around the back heading through the gates. You have also the Never Never loop that has the issue of crossing the Mersey with one place being rather sensitive. In the past a few locals never did much damaged but only have to look at the damage done at Frenchmans and the Western Arthurs to realize that there is only so much traffic an area can handle before it is trashed.

Must admit I worry I bit about Chapman's hoards as struck more than a few ill equipped (both in gear, food, navigation, and experience) doing walks he writes about. More than a few of his readers sort of think his walks are OLT standard of navigation and facilities. No great issue with locals as they understand the conditions and good to swap routes with. Also finding getting pushed out of traditional walking areas with the OLT being the warning to all. Can see Frenchmans, Western Arthurs, etc going the same way. The Dixon Kingdom use once to be a local area but hard to find a local nowadays. Most have headed more remote areas. It appears that more than a few that can not get a pass or afford the OLT head that way nowadays.

Would be good if the traffic could be spread. Walks like Reynolds Falls have enough traffic to keep the track defined but not enough to turn it into a Frenchmans Cap / WA erosion zone. But that is an in and out type walk unless you take the scenic route that we attempted the first time.

Sort of wind up endless suggesting Freycinet Peninsula as it is a natural tracked loop so looking for alternatives.

Cheers
