Does Freycinet Circuit need a permit?

Postby ssloane » Tue 04 Sep, 2012 10:10 am

We're thinking of doing the Freycinet Circuit this December, just before Christmas, camping at Cook's Beach. I saw mention of a ballot for camping in December/January on a website, but I've only seen that in one place. Even the NP website doesn't mention any sort of ballot. I thought perhaps the ballot relates only to car-based camping and not to places like Cook's Beach.

Can anyone advise?

We're coming down from Sydney so any suggestions for other walks of similar duration would be great . . . we have 3 children with us who have walked up to Pelion before and also done a 2-day Maria Island hike. Walls of Jerusalem is an option but I find the weather very dodgy in summer - a bit more stable on the coast.

Main question is about the ballot though - would appreciate any thoughts or advice on that.

The ballot system mentioned is for Richardson Beach car camping area, so you just need your Parks pass to enter the NP. Make sure you carry lots of water as it is difficult to find on the Freycinet peninsula in the summer months :D

A National Parks Pass is needed for Freycinet, whether you are camping or not.

OK, thanks. I thought that might be the case. And I did know about the NP pass - just not about bookings/ballot stuff. Thanks to both of you.

We will be there just before Christmas as well. We plan to arrive early afternoon and walk to Wineglass Bay for the night, then across to Cooks Beach to camp (1 night) then out and off to rellies at Port Arthur.

Hi - where do we buy the parks pass?
We're from Sydney, and plan on doing the Hazards Beach circuit on Christmas Eve (we have a cottage booked for a couple of nights at Coles Beach) and a walk in the alpine Hartz NP on Boxing day.
Can I prepurchase this prior to arrival in Tas?
Doogs - ty for the tip re water - we'll make sure we bring plenty
We can learn a lot from crayons. They come in different shapes and colours, but they all have to live in the same box

You can get them from the visitor centre. All the info here http://www.parks.tas.gov.au/index.aspx?base=914

If you are bringing you car across you can get them on the boat at the Tourism Tas shop on board.
