Best day walk in Mt Wellington Park

Postby LAMEA-Gals » Sat 29 Sep, 2012 11:12 am

Heading down to Tassie next month and was wanting some advice on walking to the summit of Mt Wellington. We have a free day in Hobart and wanted to walk to the top from Fern Tree. Any tips on the best track (s) to take and how long a return walk would be? I have a couple of maps from Wellington Park website but nothing seems to cover the full route - also looks like the lower parts have lots of tracks criss-crossing each other.

Thanks

I really like the walk up thbe Ice House Track from The Springs to South Wellington. From there you can go out to Smiths Monument then either back along the track to the summit or just go cross-country to the summit. Back down the ZigZag Track, along under the Organ Pipes to the Chalet. Cross the road and take the trazk to NJunction Cabin then to Sphinx Rock and a variety of choices back to Fern Tree. Probably via Shoebridge Track, Octopus Tree. Lots to see on this route. The time it takes will depend on your fitness and whether you keep moving.

Yep +1 for the Ice House Track, come back down the Zig Zag and Graham's suggestion is excellent if you have the time/energy.

I was going to recommend Myrtle Forest (Collinsvale) up to Collins Caps and/or Bonnet as probably the nicest. But unfortunately that's nowhere near Fern Tree...

Yeah I was going to suggest Montagu Thumbs via Thark Ridge, could be done via Ice House Tk with a car shuffle. I hitched back 8)
