hi guys,
i'd like to get in your beautiful country to do the Overland Track and i need some information. Is true that before October you don't have to pay the 200$ fee as in the other "hight season"? To get there from Melbourne is there just the "Spirit of Tasmania" ferry? Or there are also other companies? because it is sold out for car higher than 2,1 meters for two weeks!!
thanks for every helps anyway!
cheers

Right on the first point. There's no other ship. If you're just going for the Overland Track, your vehicle won't help much because the start and finish are far apart. Why not fly - it's cheaper.

I'm planning to fly when I go. Plan to go sometime in Feb next year.
But this has me thinking, for something different, i wouldn't mind a boat ride. I will have to look into it.

Thanks guys, i tryied to find a place in a ferry because i'll spend 3 weeks in Tasmania and with the "relocation cars" i found a good price for a campervan in Melbourne... but doesn't matter, probably i gonna go by plane... you're right is cheeper.
how is the weather in this season? do you recommend the overland track or maybe different shorter tracks in different places?
sorry guys but i try to plan everything before... and i want the best!

Lots of great tracks in Tasmania. Freycinet, Maria Island and Mt Field National Pearls are good, though it costs a bit to go to Maria Island. Frenchmans Cap track is great.

Spring weather is always miserable in Tassie.

Spring
can be great! Less people on the track than peak season. A couple of years ago I was there late September with the plan of walking the track in two days. Turned into a tough 3 day slog through unseasonably heavy snow, but a great trip. There was more snow then than the previous two mid winter Overland trips I'd done.
This was the hardest bit. No snowshoes or skis so crawling was the best option. It was the nicest powder I've seen in Tas. Have fun!

OK, I shall correct that: Spring weather in Tasssie is always miserable whenever I am there.
Besides, you know it won't last.

Maybe not always, but September in particular is notorious for very strong swinds, coming straight up from Antarctica. The winds are not (usually) quite as strong in late spring.

Hmmm, that'd be fun with a few punters (I've got a trip leaving Sept 30

Yep. Be prepared for weather no matter when you go. Curiously, the most stable weather I've had out there was in July. It was ridiculously cold...got down to -15C camping near Ossa summit..... but absolutely clear skies and hardly any wind. Snow was quite consolidated so easy to walk through for the most part.

Walked the track twice and haven't seen Cradle Mountain yet - weather.
Definitely be prepared for anything - we had everything in one week this year - warm enough for shorts and t-shirts, wind that nearly knocked you over, days of rain that obscured every mountain we walked past and two days of snow. Nevertheless - it was a great walk.
