Challenging day walks around Hobart

Thu 30 Apr, 2009 4:01 am

Hi,

I'm relatively new to Tassie and I wanted to know what day walks around Hobart area people would recommend? I'm wanting to build my fitness in order to attempt multi-day walks in the future. I want walks that are at least 5 hours and are hard (or shorter but really steep). I want to be really exhausted at the end of the day! Will happily walk for as many hours as there is daylight at the moment. Thanks so much!

I suppose first question - How far are you willing to drive to get there? And what's your experience level?

In Hobart itself I'd suggest
-Cathedral Rock/Montague Thumbs/Mt Montague is pretty good.
-Walk up Wellington from the Springs
-Walk up Collins Cap/Bonnet, Trestle Mt from Collinsvale (Myrtle Forest).

Further out:
-Adamson's Peak near Dover.
-Mount Field (heaps up there)

It might pay to grab the John Chapman "Day Walks Tasmania" book (try the map shop on Elizabeth St), or Tyrone Thomas' "120 Walks in Tasmania". I'd suggest the Chapman book is better.

Good suggestions already.
As Tassie is quite mountainous, going up hills and mountains is good training for building your fitness for multi-day walks, as you will always encounter a hill climb on a multi day walk (except Hazards beach to Cooks beach, perhaps).
Taking a pack and slowly increasing the load is also a good training thing so I have read.

This topic shows a walk that is probably not a good one to start with unless you already have pretty good fitness, better to go up Mt Wellington a few times to get your fitness right for it.
You can read about my first day walk in Tassie there...
