Best wet weather day walks

Mon 06 Jul, 2009 4:39 pm

I'm just wondering if anyone has any good ideas for day walks that can be done when it's raining and there are no views to be seen from the peaks. I'm thinking waterfalls, rivers and stuff that looks speccy despite visability being only 100-200m. So - any ideas? (oh and if you could say roughly how long they take that would be great.)

To start off:

Meander Falls - 5 hrs
Winterbrook Falls - 5 hrs

Other Ideas from below:
Kelly Basin - 3-6 hrs
Bluff River Gorge - ??
Montezuma Falls - 3 hrs
Lees Paddocks/Oxley Falls - FULL Day
Lobster Falls - 1.5hrs
Liffey Falls - ??

I really enjoyed the walk into Kelly Basin along the Bird River in a downpour, the forest dispersed most of the rain. :D
Sorry - time, maybe 3hrs from memory :?

Bluff river gorge between Woodsdale and Buckland is nice with large sandstone overhangs and speccy rock formations. 8)
Walking time from 2hrs to whatever --go as far as you like :D

I second that having done it in similar conditions. Could be done in 3 hours (very briskly, it's about 16km return) but allow time to look around the ruins, lunch, photos etc. I'd allow 4-6 hours.

Montezuma Falls. We did that one in constant drizzling rain. About 3 hours.

Lees Paddocks/Hut but I think you did it recently? Also done in pouring rain. The hut is welcome shelter in those circumstances, where you can have some lunch and dry out a bit before returning. Views around the valley, river and nearby peaks can still be speccy if the clag lifts a bit (even temporarily). Plus Oxley Falls. 5-6 hours or so I think.

Come to think of it a lot of the walks I've completed in Tasmania have suffered a similar fate weather-wise .

Lobster Falls. About 1.5 hours.

What about Liffey Falls? I've only done the short version but I think the longer route is about 2-3 hours.

Awesome, it's a shame Kelly Basin is so far from anywhere! Same with Woodsdale & Buckland (close to anywhere civilised I mean  ).
I might summarise these in the opening post so anyone else after ideas doesn't have to read the whole topic.

If you use the ferry the walk from Narcissus Bay to Echo Point and Cynthia Bay is a good daywalk in the rain. Also the Dove Canyon circuit, Bird River track, Montezuma Falls. Liffey Falls is one of the very best in the rain (nice waterfalls and fabulous forest). Split Rock falls/Shower Cave Falls at the Meander Forest Reserve is another very good one.
