Best route for Wall of Jerusalem

Postby Scout » Thu 18 Dec, 2014 3:54 pm

Hello, I'm a rather inexperienced hiker when it comes to tracks up in the north of Tasmania. What route would you recommend a bunch of teenagers take on the WoJ?
Thanks

G'day and welcome Scout,
In my experience the Mersey Valley to Dixons Kingdom would be the best route for inexperienced walkers ,well marked track ,bit steepish at the start up to Trappers Hut but a breeze from then on .
I recommend you read Chapmans fifth edition Cradle Mountain Lake St Clair and WOJ National Parks book to give you a good insight to this walk.

G'day Scout,

I'd recommend getting a copy of 'Cradle Mountain Lake St Clair and Walls of Jerusalem National Parks' by John Chapman, Monica Chapman and John Siseman.

In short, for first time, i'd recommend the most common route, which is Mersey valley to Dixons Kingdom. You can get a lay of the land and build up recognition of land marks, and add to that on future walks.

Are you all OK with gear and navigation etc?

Hey geoskid, thanks for the reply and for the recommendation!

I'm pretty sure we're all good for gear (we'll be taking pretty much the same equipment we used up at Cradle Mountain). Thanks for the help though!

Any other information you think we should know before going on the endeavor?

Probably the most important thing to be aware of is that it can snow at anytime in WoJ. When I was there last January I got sunburnt one day, and woke up to a decent dump of snow and a fairly gnarly blizzard the next. Be prepared for any weather.
