Spirit of Tasmania - Hiking Fuel Canisters

Hi all,

I want to have 8x 100 gram Isobutane/Propane (Jetboil brand) fuel canisters for mine and my buddies Jetboil stoves, for an upcoming hiking trip in Tasmania. I'm coming across with my vehicle on the Spirit of Tasmania, and my hiking companions are flying in.

Well it seems clear that shellite is not allowed. That was the experience I had last time, where I thought I could hand over my MSR shellite bottles and collect them later but they wouldn't have a bar of it - we had to tip all the shellite out!

This time around I'm onto the Jetboil stoves. I don't want to have the same uncomfortable experience. Can anyone say for sure whether the Jetboil canisters can be declared, handed over, and then collected later, or is it a definite no-go? I'm leaning towards the latter, but if it's permissible it'll save me a bit of time once I get to Tasmania.

Alternatively, are there any good hiking stores in Davenport, Launceston or Hobart that I could reserve 8x 100g Jetboil canisters, so I have them guaranteed for collection? Most likely Launceston or Hobart due to the time I get into Davenport (stores probably won't be open then!).

Hey Gavin,

Regarding the availability of fuel in Launnie- There's Allgoods and Paddy Pallin. I shop at both when in Launceston. Gary from Allgoods is particularly good with holding stuff for interstaters, I have done this with fuel many times, just walked in, paid and collected the package with different fuels for the party members all ready to go. The parking's easy in the vicinity of Allgoods and Paddy's too- there are meters as well as street-level open parking lots which cost very little, compared to parking in the CBDs on the mainland.

About five years ago we went to Tassie on the Spirit. We declared our propane canisters with no issues. He handed them over at the start of the trip and collected them in Devonport. NIce and easy.

If you want to be 100% sure send them an email. That way you will have an answer in writing.

I finished a trip in SW tassie in Dec and returned on the spirit with several canisters used with a Jet Boil, declared them and pick them up with no worries.

yep, I brought a few with me on the Spirit when we moved back to the mainland.
Allgoods are also in Devonport.

Exactly that for me approx. eight months ago, and that's exactly how the process was described in the on line info for TT Line.

The process was still the same a month ago. Gas canisters are fine.

I came back from tas and my friend had 2 rifles in his car. The security guy asked if we had anything to declare. He said no and we drove straight on.
