Meander Falls - will they freeze?

Postby MichaelPerkins » Sun 12 Jul, 2015 10:08 am

Hi guys

New to the forum but not so new to walking. I've seen a couple of photos of meander falls being frozen over, is this current cold snap going to be cold enough to freeze a waterfall? It's hard to imagine.... But I'd the consensus is it's likely then Its something I would want to go see!!

I have been there twice in the last few years when they have frozen. Worth a look. As noted above, the washout of the bridge made access a little difficult without 4WD.

I think there would be a reasonable chance they would be frozen in the next few weeks.

Our avatar is frozen Meander Falls. We have seen them this way most winters, but usually in May. I have no doubt they will be frozen for the next week early in the mornings,as we're expecting -5 Saturday and Sunday. You need to leave the carpark in the dark to get the best look at them. The sun hits them about 9am, so if you can walk fast enough you will catch them before it starts to crack. Quite beautiful with the water still running down behind the ice. Access to carpark not that difficult, just cross river at causeway just past Huntsman Lake and follow right fork in road and turn right onto old logging coupe track. You will meet up with old road and turn left toward carpark. Track surface should be ok, since it's been very dry here and it will be frozen, but 4wd preferrable so you don't chew it up further.
medicinal purposes only of course

Yes!! Feeling very fortunate :)
Taken 18/07/15
It will take awhile for that amount of ice to melt.
