Hey guys I'm very keen to see some snow before I wake up and it's summer again. A few years ago I did the Cradle loop around Scott Kilvert overnight and had the most amazing time in the snow.
What are the best options in Tassie for a similar walk, I was thinking Mt Field would be a great place to see this time of year ? I have an AWD subaru but not chains, if access is an issue ?
I tried to do Mt Ossa from Arm River a few years ago too but got flooded and never made it - is that a good winter walk if I get better weather ?

For shorter option you could do the tarn shelf @ Mt Field, and stay at twilight tarn (I think the hut is still ok for sleeping in up there but others may know more!)

Walls of Jerusalem. No probs generally for the car. If there's a bit of snow about I'd recommend snow shoes however.

I had no issues getting up to Mt Field in my Subaru last night. It is probably fine to drive in a 2wd now, although parks still want people taking chains. AWD is fine though. Better get there soon, the snow is getting pretty slushy!

You could head into Pine Valley from Lake St Clair / Narcissus. Stay overnight and Ray the Acropolis and Labryinth.

Just looked at some of the weather models and forecasts and next Monday (3/8) is looking very cold with possible snow down to VERY low levels so walks in the snow maybe just about anywhere above 300m !!

Looks like I won't get consecutive days off this week, so I'm hoping just to climb Mt Wellington whatever the conditions are. Any recommendations fro tracks or particular sights to see ? I've ridden the north south track a few times, but might walk around the pipeline track over the back to the summit this time.

Fern Tree, Silver Falls, Radfords, Springs, Ice House, South Wellington, over the summit, short distance down the road, Panorama, bit more road, then east again near the Chalet down the track whose name I can't remember that joins on the Lenah Valley track to get back to the Springs . . . or maybe the Fingerpost . . . whatever suits you to get back to Fern Tree. There is a good map available of the Wellington Park that shows all the tracks.
If you have enough time when up top you can also have a wander out along Thark Ridge.

Thanks a lot for this, this is very similar to what we plan to do. I pulled all the appropriate KML files from the greaterhobartwalks website, made it very easy to link everything up in Google Earth. The only thing missing is the Thark Ridge track, will have to find it on the my phone as I've lost my wellington park map.
Fern Free -> Wellington Falls (along the pipeline track) ->The Springs -> Pinnacle Loop -> Fern Tree
That's almost 30Km of walking, so it might be a very long day. I'm thinking about organising a coffee delivery at the springs haha.

The Thark Ridge track is not marked on the Wellington park map. But it is easily located and signposted just near the carpark a couple of hundred metres down the road below the summit. I haven't been there for a couple of years but it was quite overgrown and difficult to follow in places.

CasualNerd - don't really reckon you'd have much of a chance of completing a loop like that on a winters day in pretty thick snow.....make sure you have an exit plan! And the Thark Ridge walk leaves from Gate 5, which is where that big car park is after you come up from the Big Bend.

Thanks guys, we didn't get to the top in the end, were counting on getting a lift out from the summit but they closed all the roads so we had to walk from the chalet down to the springs where a nice ranger gave us a lift down to the open section of road. Covered 30Km's in the day somehow, and got some cool photos. Does anyone post pics here or is it all on instagram these days ?

Post em up I say. I'd love to see your pictures but don't use Instagram etc. I love Mt Wellington and have much respect for it as it's incredibly beautiful up there.
