Hi all, my partner and I are looking at spending a couple of nights in the Hartz Mountains National Park over New Years. I'm aware you're allowed to camp anywhere (with the usual rules re distance from roads etc), but am after any tips? I"m a bit anxious about impacting on sensitive areas...

Hi Lones
As far as I'm aware you are allowed to camp anywhere, within the usual rules that you mention. I was up that way on the weekend and did a circuit that included Arthur and Emily Tarns, Mt Snowy and up to Hartz peak and out via the main track. There are a couple of nice sheltered areas to pitch a tent around Emily Tarn. Its a pretty spot but a sensitive area and I wouldn't take too many folks in there. The track is a bit overgrown in places but can be followed without too many troubles. You'll find it heading off to the left just after Ladies Tarn.

The saddle between Hartz and Snowy is a spectacular campsite. Plenty of nice flat spots and water isn't that far away. Exposed though so check the forecast.
