3-night walk in Tassie, not too hard?

Sat 05 Mar, 2016 8:51 pm

Hi

We're doing some long-range planning for a bushwalk in Tassie. Thinking to walk for 3-4 days, camping 3 nights.

Any recommendations?

Andrew

Yep, my first thought too. Then Maria Island.

Ditto for Maria. Not really a bushwalk as such, but what an amazing place it is.

Depends why you are wanting to walk in Tas and when.
Most walking is around the summer months.
Winter is whole new ball game.

If it is the highlands - then Walls of Jerusalem, Pine Valley & Lake St Clair, Arm River into New Pelion Hut, Mt Field, Frenchmans Cap [a bit harder].
If it is coastal - options are Tasman Peninsula, Freycinet

Yep it'll be summer. Just looking for an enjoyable bushwalk, views are good of course! Highlands or coastal are both good.

Thanks for the ideas so far!

You could do the Three Capes Walk.

It costs money, but you'll get great views, a lovely walk and it isn't too hard because you don't have to carry as much

I second Arm River to New Pelion. Then, you have a day or two to do whatever you want - Oakleigh, Pelion East or West, or Ossa. All are fantastic and the track in up the Arm River is a cruise.

Cape Pillar circuit is free and probably as good as the commercial 3 capes track: http://tastrails.com/cape-pillar-circuit/

I have a soft spot for Mount Field.

Thanks everyone!
Arm Track, Mt Field and Three Capes circuit are on the shortlist! I called the ranger at Mt Field and found out that the hut at Twilight Tarn has a toilet, but K col doesn't. (My wife's pretty keen on toilets at camping spots). Arm Track looks great, but we might save that for the full Overland Track when the kids are a bit older!

Cape Pillar Circuit is the leader at the moment. Only 2 nights / 3 days, but that's OK. Anyone know how crowded it gets in summer? TasTrails talks about leeches and mossies; are they bad? Any other pitfalls?

I think there are close to 40 or so people a day on the official three capes experience (the hut people) and no doubt there would also be a small amount of independent walkers each day as well. So as you walk out to Cape Pillar for instance, depending on the timing, you will come across around 80 people or more depending on booing numbers.

I don't think you will get many leeches over summer although the camp ground near Wughalee falls is quite damp and definitely had mozzys when I was there at Xmas time. Water is limited also over summer so you need to consider that.

If you want the absolute best experience then I think the Walls of Jerusalem is for you. There are toilets at Wild Dog Creek and at Dixons Kingdom. Bear in mind that the hardened sites at Wild Dog Creek are often full in summer. There are plenty of places to camp generally, but the only loos are as mentioned.
