Bishop & Clerk with 6mth old

Postby bushnut » Wed 20 Apr, 2016 3:24 pm

Hi all, just wondering what people's thoughts are regarding doing Bishop & Clerk with a 6 month old in a baby backpack. I am a reasonably experienced walker with pretty good fitness so not concerned about the weight or ascent but more concerned with general risks of having my son on my back. I don't want to do a walk that will result in him being thrown from side to side constantly.

We will be based in Hobart so if there are better options (e.g. on Bruny, around Port Arthur) happy to consider those. Haven't been to Maria so thought this might be a good chance!

Cheers

Most of the track is very easy and straightforward. Just two issues...

1. I would find it way too long to have a 6 month old on my back, but if you're used to doing it for a few hours then that should be OK. (For me, 2 hours was about as much as I could stand of carrying a baby in a back-pack - although ours was a little older then.)

2. Right at the very summit itself, there are a couple of technically difficult bits. Not difficult without a baby on your back, but a little challenging nevertheless (ie, high reach and lift yourself up with your hands at one spot - lower yourself on the way back down). I would not want to do this with a baby on my back.

You might get a bit of that crossing the boulder field.

Thanks for the advice.

Having thought about it a little more it might be too long a walk as the little guy needs to sleep and the backpack (although very comfortable) is not really suitable for that.

Might stick to something around Tasman as the walking seems easier and there is no ferry timing to contend with.
