Lake McCoy

Postby Nuts » Sat 28 Nov, 2009 7:14 am

Anyone been into Lake McCoy (from Arm River (area)). Followed a tagged route that went in past the lake and up onto the cliff line. Spectacular view down over Lee's across the valley. I was wondering if the route was marked just to there. Seems a long way just to go there without then hooking up with the Pillinger track or heading down into the valley. It's a nice walk and well chosen route but i'd imagine it goes further? (didnt get a lot of time to keep looking)

Needs a bit of work but getting there, thanks Phil
(next lesson will be resizing and marking points of interest... )

Followed the markers as far as the prominent 'spur' directly south of Lake McCoy....(?)
I think the 1200m peak to the north west is Pillinger...

hmmm, maybe not huh... i suspect its a club thing.... another thought was that perhaps it winds back to Leonis.... would make a great circuit walk linked with any of the other tracks in the area, pretty thick off track though.... will have to explore further one day...

(If anyone would like to Share even a pm would be appreciated...)

I once followed the track most of the way to Lake McCoy after I "lost" my two companions who were behind me on the Arm River track heading to Pelion (hello Koolix! ). It transpired that they had turned off to Lake McCoy thinking it was the main track. Until then I didn't even know about the route. I realised they had gone that way & followed them, hoping in vain that the track would eventually head NW to Mt Pillinger. As it was getting a bit late & I hadn't found them I decided to backtrack to Pelion Hut. When the penny dropped they also turned back and spent the night at Lake Price. We met up the next day. I felt a bit sheeepish as I was supposed to be leading.....
I agree that it seems a waste not to hook up with another track somewhere. Hopefully someone will have more info.
Cheers,
Rohan

Cheers Rohjoe, I wont give too many more details of where I started but I had been hoping it would end up another interesting route into Pelion. As it turned out I ended up backtracking almost back to the car and starting again rather than tackle the couple of k's cross country to the Pillinger track. The only alternative off this route that i saw was right back near the carpark (ie. the other track that (i know) heads to Pelion).

I really like the walk to Pelion and this area, look forward to exploring more. It would be good to hear from someone who had an idea about this route and where it heads (or if its just an in/out to Lake McCoy and the cliffs)

After a great walk yesterday I can probably shed some light as to tracks etc in the area. I'm fairly sure that the track that you followed 'Nuts' from Lake McCoy to the cliff line goes there only.....for the views down onto Lees paddocks I expect. I'm not certain if it goes into Lees or not but saw no sign of it going any where near the Pillinger track. On a Geocaching excursion to the area we walked up onto Pillinger from the same carpark which takes you to McCoy...but obviously taking the right turn at the first junction across the first creek. Wanting to go to McCoy as well...we descended off the summit to the first main saddle then basically headed SE picking up very easy going along easements for the first 1.5km then a bit of scrub bashing for a couple of hundred metres before getting to more open going descending down an easy gully to the southern end of the lake. We had numerous stops as one of the party was having severe ankle problems but still only took around 1.5hrs. In my view doing the round trip in this direction is definitely easier as you're walking/scrub bashing down hill to the lake. Overall trip time was 7.5 hrs at a very leisurely pace with many stops. Certainly an extremely enjoyable trip.
After a day's walk everything has twice its usual value.

This taped track stops at the lookout above Lees Paddocks. When I was there with the LWC earlier in 2009, I too thought about how great a "down" link to the Arm River Track would be from there, to give options for doing circuits. Here are some photos from that trip, including a panorama of the view from the lookout - worth clicking on to see the full size version. viewtopic.php?f=9&t=1880
