Re: Bushwalkers Found By Helicopter in Western Arthurs

Well…I was thinking that if we got together enough money to buy a set of pods for the WAs which would be Junction Creek, Cygnus, Oberon, High Moor, Haven and lets add Lake Rosanne so that is 6 pods for a set sitting ready too swap when the heli window opened.

This mean you would not have to have both the heli window and the pump out window aligning. The pump out could happen at the pumpers leisure so to speak.

So we need to find $6,000.00. I for one would sponsor a pod for $1,000.00. It would be to me a small price to pay for the days of leisure I have enjoyed in the Tas Parks.

Or is this too complicated?

By the way it would be good if the pods had some instuctions on them. "No number ones" "No Rubbish". And no this sort of info was not on all the pods in December 2009 / January 2010.

Yeh I was quite shocked by people throwing their rubbish into them. Do they think they were some kind of bins??

haha I wonder if they opened them and said "SOMEONE TOOK A DUMP IN THIS RUBBISH BIN"

G'day all

Sorry, been away from the forum for a bit, tied up with fires.

I can confirm that we have had all the stars aligned six times now since November, to shuttle the 'sputniks' out of the WA, only to be beaten by the weather on the day. Ultimatley it's the pilots call, and they are understandably wary of flying around the WA's, which is notorious for its unpredictable winds, with a fully laden tank below them. If they get into trouble, they push a big red button that drops the cable, strops, tank and half a ton of you know what on whatever they happen to be over at the time. As the ranger in charge of tha area, I'm not going to risk that.
We are having issues with helicopter availability as well, with most of the ones that are capable of carrying sling loads, being either tied up with fires or being sent to Antarctica.

We have new signs attached to the spare tanks regarding not using the bins for rubbish etc, and they will be attached to the ones on the range when they are emptied.

As someone said earlier, it is very frustrating for us, knowing they are full. We are having attempt number 7 this week. Will keep you posted.

Cheers

Binder

There were no toilets when I walked through there (I should get out more  )

Does that one seem to be working ILUVSWTAS?

Those on the Overland Track (now conveniently labeled 'fly out' toilets) were a bit of a disaster. I wondered how they'd go when they were being built (but trusted that someone would know more than a me...). I thought when they were 'switched' to a fly out system that all options had been exhausted, the only one remaining being flying the waste out. Since then I have heard from numerous people (including a german guy who designed and built solar heated composting toilets in the alps) the opinion that they can be made to work, quite well and without the overpowering odour, flies and associated health risk. Is it a cost/maintenance thing, has this been explored (or are good 'old' opinion and politics involved).... I wonder ?? (ie.. dont 'know', just 'wonder')
