overland track in spring

Postby lacebark » Fri 02 Apr, 2010 7:41 pm

We enjoyed a wonderful Overland Track walk (plus Pine Valley) in mid March. We want to do the walk south to north (ie before 1 November, when TPWS requires you to walk north to south). August, September and October are options for us. We have reviewed weather histories and recognise the weather is unpredictable, but would like advice from those who have done the walk in spring. Earlier in spring, we would expect more snow on ground, less thaw, more cold. It also seems that spring flowering probably doesn't really start until late spring/summer. So, can you let us know of your experiences and preferences!

Spring really is a case of pot-luck with the weather (as is any time of the year in Tassie). If you are lucky enough to get a clear spell just after a late Spring snowfall, the walking can be absolutely magical, particularly at the Labyrinth and Lake Rodway. On the other hand it can be relentlessly windy and wet and grey for a week or more at a time.
