Bastion Cascades - walking time?

Hi,
I'm after some info on the Bastion Cascades walk, particularly how long we should allow. The book I have says 4-5 hours return for 6km. That sounds like a long time for 6km. Is there a lot of climbing involved?
Any other info regarding this walk would also be appreciated - I've heard it is a very pretty and interesting walk.

Hi Deb, I've done the Stone Hut/Bastion Cascades walk and it is a lovely and interesting walk. There is info here: http://www.molecreek.info/bastion_cascade_walk.htm It did take me a few hours, but I spent some time exploring the cascades and I found the rocky cliffs interesting too. By climbing do you mean height gain, or scrambling? There wasn't any scrambling from memory.

G'day Deb,
This is a really good walk with no scrambling or extreme conditions ,like any Tassie walk you do rise a bit early but nothing to be concerned about.if you do it say G'day to the gnomes for me

Bastian Cascades was the "Strollers" first walk. It took us just over 4 hours. You could do it quicker though, we aren't the go fast types of walkers. I'd say 3 hours for a fit, fast walker up to 5 hours for someone fairly unfit. Nice walk, nothing crazy although a bit rough under foot in bits.

Did the Bastion Cascade walk today and what a wonderful walk. We walked to the Stone Hut first (said goodaye to the gnomes) and then down to the Bastion. The walk is sensational, the huge rock formations and the colours in the sandstone at Crowdens Croft are fantastic. Some of the valleys with the tree ferns, sassafras and other rain forest species was pristine.The walk was not too difficult - the climb up to Stone Hut is 200M in 1KM so it is pretty steep. The track is over grown with ferns in places but there are plenty of markers on the trees so no problems. It took us a bit over 3 hours, we stopped to take photos of the flora and we are old farts in our mid sixties but experienced bush walkers. We drove up to the start of the Stone Hut track and it was no problem for my Subaru Forester and we walked 4.3KM.

From another old fart I agree that this is a really nice day walk ,would be interesting to spend a night in "stone hut" or camp under one of the overhangs.

Thanks for all your replies.
Planning to do this walk on Sunday and taking a couple of newbies with us. Sounds like exactly the walk we are looking for to convert them!

We finally did this walk yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed it. Took us just over 4 hours with a few photo stops and a lunch stop. Thanks for your input - this is definitely a walk I would recommend to others and one I would enjoy doing again.

Deb there is a story but I dont know it something to do with a Geocashe I think ,I am sure someone out there knows.
Gnomes have been known to travel long distances just check with Gnome owners who awaken of a morning and find their little mates have gone walk about

Walked with a small group up to Bastion Cascades last Saturday via Stone Hut and what a wonderful walk it was The water was roaring down the cascades and the Fungi throughout the walk were absolutely stunning. We weren't in any hurry as we had a couple of inexperienced walkers with us, so it ended up taking us a little over 5 hours which really felt a comfortable pace

We stopped and had a lovely chat with the gnomes, and they said to say gidday!
Your right about those rock overhangs, they are spectacular! The day we went it was very misty which gave them a really spooky look
Btw, one of our party was interested to know what the name of the mountain on your right as you are walking through the logging coup at the start of the walk, it is very imposing and it would be great to find out it's name if someone out there knows.

I would sugest that it's Mother cummings peak that you are looking at, but I may be wrong.
