mt Weld in a day in winter?

Postby iaindtiler » Tue 25 May, 2010 4:52 pm

I am planning on doing Mt Weld in a day with a mate in early june. have heard the track is poorlymarked and non existent in places. we are both experienced, fit and capable map readers, so the lack of track is not too big an issue. is there still access to the end of South Weld rd, as this would hopefully be our start point??? Are we mad ???

Yeh pretty mad. I've done Mt Weld twice, both times as overnighters. Stubowling and a mate did it in a day a few years back. Took them around 10-11 hrs. and they are known for making good times.

Not saying it cant be done, just have a good headtorch on standby, and tracking on your GPS. the track has been recently re-tagged so it isnt too bad.

Regarding access, there are several new boom gates in the area, I would ring Forestry at Geeveston to ask if the gates will be open a few days before you plan on going!

Make sure you report back to us here on how you went!! It's a big mountain with a seriously long climb. Good luck!!

Anytime.
The lake you mentioned is where we camped both times. It is a nice spot, a bit more sheltered than shelf camp maybe, MJD and myself had one rather windy night up there but we survived ok.

Definately wouldn't recommended a day trip in Winter.

The track is pretty good, the start is an old bulldozer track that has over grown once you realise that its pretty easy to navigate.
All the tapes leading off to the side are just avoiding fallen trees and then rejoins the main trail.
Up the ridge is pretty well taped, but it pretty much just follows the ridge line.
The next section is overgrown and scrubby, but there is a well worn pad underneath and a few tapes,
its relatively easy to follow if your used to pushing through scaparia..

Up higher below the lake where you reach an open section, the pad runs out and its indistinctly marked from then on.
Pretty much at that point I think the easiest option is follow the outlet creek up to the Lake. There are cairns in the creek.

The camp site is really nice... but I get the impression that the wind can really rip down over the ridge behind it and there
isn't too much in the way of shelter.

Nice walk and as an overnighter the days aren't too long for winter.

Cheers

Aaorn
